UK Border Force makes me rage so much

I remember coming back from Spain on a ferry into Portsmouth. I got taken aside and asked where I was going. I said I'm going to London. The Border Officer literally shouted at me saying, "Why are you going to London?"

My answer, "I live there."

Also I was quite annoyed that I was the only person who got called over by the border officers and I happened to be the only ethnic guy travelling on the ferry. Coincidence?

No offence meant here but....

Of course they are going to highlight ethnic minorties, it would be a bit silly not to. Bit pointless to pick out a blatent white British person. Be like me getting annoyed going to a country where I would be a ethnic minority and complaining for the same.

I agree.

OMFG a blatant (correct spelling btw) white English person? Assuming the picking out is done by visual means, which is quite logical, how is any other caucasian European to look any different from you. Not to mention the 5th or 6th generation Black Englishman/woman of Caribbean descent or some such other ethnic minority who is actually a British Citizen.

Why shouldn't they stop you anyway? Just because you are Mr Blatent Whitey, doesn't mean your passport is up to date, or you haven't been abroad for nefarious activities or you aren't a known football hooligan banned from travelling.

If they can't stop everyone, then it should be random or based on specialist observation skills, not to pick the first/only person seen with a different skin colour.

For the record I am a quite chunky blatent white British person but put on a pair of shorts, sandals and a camera round my neck and I could easily pass for a tubby German tourist.

europeans (who are predominantly white) are allowed in under eu law without visas or work permits etc. most (if not all) oriental/indian/black populated countries arent part of the eu.

with that considered, i can kind of understand them stopping people from ethnic minority groups as they are far more likely to require visas etc.

of course, if they are just doing it because they 'don't like darkies', then that'd be morally reprehensible.

You know that the British/European ethnicity is a white, right? and there's a difference between being a British citizen and being ethnically British right?

I am white, if I was born in China would that make me a Chinaman?

It doesn't mean they can't be stopped to ask the purpose of their visit and it isn't a accurate response to mine questioning how someone is blatantly white British.

Of course... people from ethnic minority groups should be disproportional stopped more (assuming the evidence shows people from ethnic minority groups are more likely to have an irregularity with their status).

If you read my post completely you will see I had emboldened part of the quote and that was what most of my post focussed on. Namely how does one visually tell a blatant white British person from a blatant white French person or a blatant white German person? Last time I looked they didn't all wear garlic round their necks or bratwurst shoved down their lederhosen.

I think it's wrong to automatically assume if someone's not white that they may not be a UK citizen. Sure, it's stupid to ignore it, as the UK is predominantly white, but look how many UK citizens aren't. I can see why someone would be slightly upset, especially if they were the only one being picked on. There could have been other white people from outside of the UK too. It's a tricky one as you can't check everyone, but there should be an easier system in place rather than picking on people because of what they look like.

i was more making the point that the 'british' part was largely irrelevant. (albeit somewhat vaguely)

From a purely practical point of view, i suppose you are more likely to catch people who dont meet entry requirements if you mostly just stop ethnic minorities, as the overwhelming number of white people are automatically allowed entry because the eu is predominantly white.

this IS discrimination based on skin colour, but thats all it is. Discrimination doesn't equal racial hatred. Of course, the person being stopped is going to know that only ethnic minorities are getting stopped, and will assume its because of 'racism'.

Discrimination isnt automatically bad/evil/amoral. We have been led to believe it is by hysterical tabloid media and some rather poor legislation. Discrimination is just about choice. Its the intent BEHIND the discrimination that makes an action unacceptable.

of course, its nigh impossible to tell the difference between someone being practical/efficient and someone who actually IS racist, and i can understand why someone from an ethnic minority could be made uncomfortable. even if its just by their own prejudices/assumptions (people in uniform are only stopping ethnic minorities, so they might be racist).

All things considered, its a tricky situation and the only real solution would be to stop everyone or nobody at all, as this is the only way people wont be able to assume the worst.

Okay, that's fine :) I am getting sick social Marxism which seems to be affecting people as of late, I thought you were going to start quoting social construct ********.:D

As for above, they do dress slightly differently and they talk differently it is subtle though in a lot of cases.

Those damn pesky asians, what next eh.

Anyway, I've heard of people who have done what that "student" did (coming here to "study" but end up working while only doing basic studying if you could call it that).

It is rather rubbish.

absolutely, i agree with you.

however, it is more likely that someone who isn't white is going to have to have visas/entry requirements/permits etc, purely because EU citizens dont have any such requirements and are predominantly white.

I hope im making sense!

The amount of absolute idiots on the Australian/NZ programme is ridiculous. There are so many people trying to get through with suitcases full of their dodgy looking 'food' and then moan when they're caught, despite ticking the box stating that they don't have any food with them. It's always the non-English speakers as well, just idiots.

As said though, they actually get it right, whereas on the UK programme, they seem to just let anyone through...

I didn't say I was angry and in part I agree that people of ethnic minorities are more likely to come to the country illegally due to the lack of access. At the time it made me feel uncomfortable that out of 500+ people my passport had to be checked twice, the normal check everyone has and then to make sure it was authentic.

I don't think I could handle doing that job. I think I'd want to shake them whilst shouting "WHY ARE YOU SO STUPID?!" :p

My answer, "I live there."

Surely they could have just simply checked your passport.:p

Indeed, that's what I was saying too, you'd be a fool to not realise that when checking these things, but it can easily come across as discrimination, be it for the wrong or right reasons.
