I rang in sick today.

I've worked part time at Morrison's since I was 16 (now 19) whilst at college and I hate the place, I've had so many issues with them, mainly regarding scheduling, like they'd just put me down for a shift without notifying me, or changing my hours, again without notifying me, even though really I shouldn't have to check the schedule at all as I've got a contract, you and the dept manager are also supposed to initial it saying you've agreed to it, eventually got a disciplinary about it. I explained they'd just put me down without telling me, I never initialed it, them changing my hours which I could prove etc but still got a verbal warning from the most illogical manager ever who just kept repeating "The onus is on you to check the schedule regularly".

I also wanted to change my contract hours to suit my new college timetable this year so asked my dept manager months in advance if we could work something out, he goes, yeah I have enough hours to do that, just work really hard for me for the next few months and I'll change it. At the time I was doing 3 closedowns a week on produce for him, often staying upto an hour extra making sure it was really good, did this for a few months and in the end he made up some bull about how he would trial me or something and basically when I moaned he made it out I was crying as I couldn't get my own way.

I'm also a relief cashier and I've sometimes spent almost 3 hours, in a 5 hour shirt on tills yet still expected to do a perfect closedown etc.

We also had a new supervisor on Produce for a few months who often would do up to 10 hours+ extra a week (unpaid) and in the end quit the role and his job and is now much happier for doing so after finding another job.

This is the same company that my girlfriend is having problems with in my thread. It is reassuring in a weird way to know she is not alone in how she is being treated as a few of you have described the same issues she is having perfectly.

Morrisons seems to like to exploit hard workers. One of my mates works there aswell and kept on getting dragged in for extra shifts. He was on a part time contract doing full time hours while studying at university. Getting paid base wage even when he was covering for assistant managers and the like. Not as bad as your story by any means but it seems like a nationwide cockup.
A month or two ago he simply started to refuse the extra shifts and is more happy than before, may be that being slightly 'selfish' is the way to go with this store.

Even if the employers do not like the fact you are ill, the most important is for you to be healthy, and fit for any job.

Our company has pretty strick guidlines that if you are ill where your job is affected then it's best you stay at home, due to health and saftey if you are not doing a job to your full capacity and you are at work and something happens then the company could be at risk to i.e injury or injuring someone else/ from lack of concerntration, your company knows this but they are well overworking you,

dude do not feel guilty for not being at work, and if they moan at you then ask them if would want to risk of something happening due to fact that you are not very well.

For some reason as soon as I read that post I straight away knew that it sounded like Morrisons, the same carp in our store. I'm a petrol station assistant manager at our local store but know the fishbar manager quite well and I can safely say that you're not the only one in a pants position he is basically in the exact same position, low amounts of staff, someone off sick and him doing a stupid amount of hours.

Nice pun...:D

Do what I would do, my shift and then walk out at the end. Regardless of what state the place is in.

Unless A. Its a career and I can see myself benefiting out of it or
B. I am getting paid more for it and have agreed
c. Only going to be for a short time, and know someone is trying there god damn hardest to sort it out (aka doing a favour, to be pulled in later).

Unfortunatly I joined the RAF and now just do as am told :p

Its not just Morrisons - tho it seems worse there than most places from the few people I've talked to - I work in retail too and its going that way here - not recruiting new staff - management just taking us for granted and expecting us to get the job done even tho we are 2 staff down on the number of people required to sensibly do the job - and no margin for error - if anyones off ill it comes down hard on those left. If we take it up with our boss(es) we just get noises about how they "really" need to cut staff levels further *hint**hint* and doing "everything" they can to keep our jobs. With bills to pay and not great employment opportunities around here its not worth pushing it.

I think it's disgusting the way these businesses treat their own staff! You should get a group together who are in the same position and get some sort of publicity. Get in the magazines and make some cash out of it. They shouldn't be allowed to get away with it! Sounds like you've worked your backside off and have burnt out. I remember when I had to work 3 months solid, without any days off for a big IT migration and it was a nightmare, but at least there was light at the end of the tunnel for me, for you, well, it's terrible mate. I really feel for you.

Unfortunately, I think this is one of the only ways retail business likes this stays competitive :(

the crazy thing here is that if the op was offered normal working hours with the ability to book holiday he would be back to work tommorrow.

i appreciate that is not going to happen in this instance but it is terrible how far the company have pushed the op to the point of break down.
