Hi guys,

I don't know anything about exercise bikes so I was wondering if you guys would point me towards one. I only have a small budget of £50-£80. Would I be able to get anything for this?

Cheers

Will you get one? Yes
will you get one worth having? No

buy some trainers, go for a run

You've got to understand though, that WAS a helpful response.

If you buy a piece of crap chances are the motion will be horrible, the thing will be difficult to peddle, lack any profiles or settings and basically be so horrible to ride that you'll never use it.
You need to be willing to invest a lot of money to get usuable cardio equipment at home (a punchbag is the exception to this rule). Thats why buying a proper bike or some running shoes are much more viable and pretty much always a better option, if you want to use cardio machines, your better off joining a gym.

For less than a hundred quid your probably going to be looking at a 2nd hand low end bike thats never bin used, and there will be a good reason for that.

Stationary Bikes are considered the lazy mans cardio.

If you have the room and really want a home exercise machine, I'd invest in a cross trainer or rowing machine.

I'm not going to not buy something because some idiot thinks it's 'lazy mans cardio'. I don't care what another people think tbh.

I have been looking at some of the cheap ones on Argos though and they have mixed reviews... A few people saying they didn't peddle very well.

Either way, what people are saying is no you can't get an exercise bike worth having for £80 - in this case it would be a much better idea to either save up more money, or just get some running shoes and jog/run for cardio, instead of buy a crap exercise bike that you won't use.

What ever you do PLEASE DO NOT BUY FROM ARGOS!!! It will break in a matter of days!

You have been warned.

btw, is there any reason why you want a bike instead of going out for a jog/run/power walk? I find doing cardio on a stationary machine incredibly boring! Get out, find an interesting route and you'll enjoy it more.

You will get bored of it sooner or later and it'll just be taking up room in your house.

I bought a £30 exercise bike from ******, belt snapped within 3 days. Not surprising really as it was generating so much heat that the plastic was melting. I think they're designed for very gentle exercise of the type where you don't break a sweat or even get out of breath. As soon as you try to get a proper workout then it will break.

Wouldn't bother unless you can up the budget by a factor of 10.

Why not buy an actual bike for £80? You'll get a semi-decent second hand road bike/hybrid off places like Gumtree, and that's way more fun.

Can you commute to work by bike? Having a useful purpose (ie getting to work every day) will increase your enjoyment of cycling and this'll make you want to do it more and more without a use (other than just enjoying it).

I'm not going to bother anyway. Starting to jog soon so hopefully that'll be just as good.

Yes, it will be much better.
A cheap exercise bike at home will be rubbish and you will soon get bored.

Outside, going for a jog/run or even getting a bike is way better as you can vary your route, listen to music, see the outside world.

Gym's are very useful, especially for cardio if the weather is really bad, but a home gym is never worth investing in unless you really have the money to do so properly.

I always used to run on the treadmill in the gym, but I finally started running outside properly a few years back and I hate running on treadmills now.

The people on this forum speak good sense! Just because you didn't get the answer you wanted doesn't mean that it's the wrong one!

Invest in some running shoes, or in a cheapish bike and get out on the road! You'll feel so much better for it!

Or as someone suggested save up further and invest in a good cross trainer, I hit those most days in the gym and you can damn feel it!

Glad to see you have been converted. ;)

To the op. Static bikes and treadmills are people who want to get fit but can't be arsed. Go outside its harder, more fulfilling and if you want to get fit you'll get there 50 times faster.
