Hi Guys.

I would love to purchase a 5870 or a GTX 480... but they are just too expensive for just playing games.

I want to get the best bang for me buck, but I also want to be satisfied playing at 1920x1200 resolution. I also want the card that is the most future proof.

Reviews are a bit sketchy when reviewing ther GTX470. Some saying the 5850 is better other say the GTX 470 is half way between the 5850 and the 5870.

I personally believe the 5850 is better are current generation games, but the 470 will be better for tomorrows DX11 games.

Any comments.

I currently have a 3870x2 card that is just about holding its own, so im in no imidiate rush....... was initially wating for the new ATI series to come, but it probably is a good 3-4 months away.

I have a crossfire only motherboard however, though Im not looking to crossfire, its nice to keep options open.

I have owned both the GTX 470 and the ATI 5870.

I found the GTX 470 to have better minimum frame rates and game play felt smoother in games and i personally had less driver issues with the GTX 470.

However most people on these forums will point you in the direction of the HD 5850 as its considered the best bang for buck and overclocks extremely well and use less power/ less heat.

If i was in your postion i would personally buy the GTX 470 after owning both cards.

Either way the GTX 470 or the HD 5850 you cant go wrong really.

You truely belive that the GTX 470 is in the same class as a 5870?

Most reviews compare the GTX 470 to the 5850.

What about noise levels. My computer is at ear height and only about 2 feet away from me, the case is well ventilated however.

i didnt say that, what i said was the GTX 470 was smoother when gaming and had better minimum frame rates this is my experience.

I found Nvdia drivers better and had less problems

If you after a quiet card the GTX 470 is not for you and the HD 5850 is more suited as its a lot quieter

Nah in not neccessarilty after a quiet card at all. It can make an acceptable amount if noise, just have no idea how loud it is, and like I said Im only 2 feet away from the computer.

When you said you thought the GTX 470 was smother, did you mean smother than the 5850 or 5870?

I'll say that 470 overclocked to 800MHz+ and a set of good headphones beats a 5870 with a reasonable OC

also he means smoother than the 5870 (because of higher minimum fps) which is backed up by reviews

Guys Im an absolutle newbie when it comes to overcloking!

Can we take overclock out of the equation. Anyway, the GTX 470 is hot and loud enough at stock let alone overcloking it!

I found these benchmark results: http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc...zotac-geforce-gtx-470-686665/review?artc_pg=4

Are these somehow, a bit biased in terms of Nvidia? They have the 470 consitantly beating the 5870?

Additionally Iv just googled how my current card (3870x2) compares to the gTX 470 with regard to sound and temperatus.

Guess what, my 3870x2 is more power hungery and makes more noise!

You'd be surprised. The first cards ran loud and hot because of the fan profile. Read the multiple overclocking guides around for the GTX470 on the stock coolers.

If your room temperature is 25oC, take GTX470.

Yesterday, when going to buy card, I test a GTX470 with room temp is more than 30oC, card set in case RC690, the temp of card was going more than 105oC when play Metro 2033-Furmark 115oC in 5 minutes, and very loudness =>I think the card will not die by that temp, but the orther computer part will be influenced: mobo, CPU,.... I see if I buy that card I will must invest in cooling solution for that!

Therefore, I decide take the 5870: it is cheaper GTX470 20USD. After one night testing I see it is Quiet, cool and performance is good=> I don't see anything minimum frame rate problems (Call Of Duty 6, Dirt 2, GTA 4, Battle filed Bad Company, Need For Speed Shift...) not as 4870 I used before!

Before, I'm very like GTX470, because it have PhysX, but after reading Mafia 2 recommend system for PhysX: "Minimum GTX260+9800GTX, Recommend GTX470+9800GTX" => I see to have the best PhysX experience for PhysX game in future: the best way is buy a Nvidia Card to make PhysX Card, we can not lay on one card to play game and PhysX if want smooth gaming, GTX470+480 will be exhausted when play game and PhysX same time!
