Just wondering if lan partys are now a thing of the past ?,

Many moons ago when i was really into gaming lan partys were all the rage, now they appear to be extint, i know the internet has come a long way now but cumon surely you dont get the same buzz as when you with a bunch of mates in a good game of utquake etc

I still do the occasional LAN, but we're limited to older games as not everyone has new hardware.

If I remember correctly Starcraft II doesn't have any LAN... Maybe it is dieing.

wow fast comments, i series , i seem to remmber that, i just think it would be a massive chame for it to die out..

Its kind of the only part of video gaming that keeps me on track from thinking 'im wasting my life doing somthing unsocial etc etc.. ocuk lan even any1

They are not dying.

An unofficial Annual OcUK LAN would be a good idea.

Need a commitee to organise one though.

I would happily put myself forward to work on the said commitee.

I still go to LAN's every few months.

Problem now is, not many new games even come with a LAN option, and many require the internet to even start a MP game.

So we usually end up playing older stuff, Flatout 2, UT2K3, etc etc.

Last time I attended a lan party it descended into a load of guys bragging about how good their hardware was, elitism players looking for those who weren’t quite up to their standard and just owning them and then there was a few guys with portable hard disks sat their leeching from others – mostly their collection of porn, porn videos or pirated games..

That was about 7 years ago, not been to one since. It was rather funny, oh and the room was full of coke cans, the smell of sweat, empty pizza boxes and reams of cable trailing all over the floor..

Not pleasant to be truthful.. oh and some were even smoking pot, and I went home smelling rank, my pc had this awful smell in the fans for weeks and I didn’t want to see a pizza box for a few weeks either – for some strange reason.

I’m sure professionally organised events are nothing like what I saw.. lol

I can see the issues with regards to lan partys, with regards to ultimate sadness i disagree.

Shame about newer games no longer having lan support. I think there would have to be a large amount of interest to make a lan party work, lan games of bc2 etc could be rather epic though with teamwork actually coming into play much much more.

Thought about setting a one up in Manchester, I have free access to a large hall, t'internet access... don't know if anyone would be interested

Multiplay usually have some kind of LAN going every month, there are numerous other groups who are either supported by mpuk or have since branched out to do their own thing. If you wanted to travel you could probably go to a lan every other weekend, so no, not really dying out ;)

Never been to one and never will. Ultimate sadness IMO.

You aren't doing it right then :D

We have about 20-25 of us, we rent a village hall with walking distance to a nice local pub.

Someone usually brings a set of decks for excellent tuneage.

Kitchen is stocked with beverages. Local supermarket gets raided for snacks.

In the evening there is a pilgrimage to the pub for grub (mmm 8oz Steaks) and beer on tap, stumble back to the village hall, attempt to play games while inebriated.

Feel free to mail my trust - FrenchTart and myself have organised a few in Manchester before (fragM series), and the hardest part was always finding a suitable venue!

If you're serious about organising one, I'll give you some freindly advice and whatnot :)

Stelly... Myself and another very active OCUK member host our own lans, one in stockport - 40 seats and one in Irlam - 50 seats, we want to combine our two events and so on.

If you are up for it, we could have a threesome? we have some amazing contacts for sponsors etc.

wes, this is why its invite only, our lans are based from an online gaming community, and we invite friends of friends etc, so its alright as you can yell "STFU" when you feel the need
