Might get offered job in Leicester. Never been anywhere near, but I can't turn this work down.

Just a couple of questions please from anyone that knows ...?

1) Are there kind of quaint villages a little out of the city where I can get into the city in maybe 30 minutes on my motorbike for the work, but enjoy country life away from it all during the evenings? Village pub - nice views - you know the gig! Kind of the best of both worlds .. Anywhere within 30 mins ride? (And this bears in mind the traffic .. how bad is it? At the moment I'm in London and average about 10mph travelling so surely it's better .. er .. maybe?_

2) Is it a poor/quite depressed area. Like -- er -- about 95% of Scotland for example? (Thats an entire demograph insulted there! sorry!) - or is it actually quite nice as it does it have high employment and quite nice jobs, or high UNemployment and lots of ****** scratching around to try and get by?

3) Has it got a Brummie / harsh accent?

4) Is there any area which I should avoid like the plague when choosing to rent a house (bearing in mind its going to be a 400 mile round trip to view the house .. I don't want to find myself in Beirut when the advert promised Surbiton!)

5) Is there anything else I should worry about or is wierd compared to other cities, or is it just the same fundermentally as if I'd said 'what's leeds like' or 'whats winchester like'?

I appreciate this.

Britters.

I don't want a link to the wiki about the place as I've already read it.

*edit* I was reading more about Leicester and found this. Holy mother of god they sound like absolute retards:

Leicester is a horrible place, however you will find nice area outside of the city

A lot of ares are very run down with an extremely high immigrant population

Traffic generally is not that bad

Is it like Leeds or Winchester ? er no chance , seriously the nearest equivalemts would be Bradford and Luton ( not just for the obvious reasons )

Moses yea might do that.

Rotty -- I'm seriously worried. I've spent 15 years in a reasonably nice part of SouthWest London where there is a lot of money floating around. This is not showing off - it's just nicer as the council can afford to keep the streets nice, crime is lower, people don't throw empty cigerette cartons out of their car windows or gob on the street or scream '**** OFF MATE OR I'LL STAB YOU' at 2am, there are no '***** fights outside the pub', no one has a burnt out sofa (!) on their front lawn for 7 years and a pile of worn down car tyres for no apparent reason (!!) etc etc.

I think I may sit in a travel lodge for 3 months, keeping London house on, and make a serious decision about if Leicester is really a step forward ..

google maps says '46 minutes' from Rutland. That is certainly doable. Thanks - gonna use wonderful Google to see what I think of this Rutland area...

Leicester city centre is very nice, and has lots of shops and decent flats.

Narborough road has a high student population in the term time which is lots of fun, but come summer, christmas it is all polish etc. Still not bad though.

There are lots of villages just outside which may also suit.

The traffic is fine, although the one way system does grate at times.

there must be 2 Leicesters :p

I'll happily spend £1000 a month on temporaryish rent because yes its a contract and yes my rate let's me do such things.

The life-plan is to see if I love it there .. and if I do .. we've (me and the missus) been meaning to skip London for years now, so I'll say (after 'collecting the dosh for a year or something)

'Hey, I'll go permie, and you only have to pay me £65K per year. Bargain eh?'

They say yes

We 'properly' move near by.

I try and do this bizarre rumour I've heard about called 'a career' (rather then 'grab as much money as you can, mercenary scum'!)

Happily ever after ...

There's plenty of great villages and scenic countryside in Leicestershire.

I live in Billesdon which is great, small, view of fields from most of the village, two pubs, post office and a small shop.

I lived in Hungarton previously which was a little too small for my taste.

I don't verture in to the centre much, but the new Highcross is OK and you will find pretty much anything you will need. It's a prety average city.

It's very 'multicultural' (i hate that word) which means loads of great curry houses especially in Syston and Melton Road. Loads of good Chinese / Thai / Greek / Italien / any other random restaurant you could think of too.

Plenty of 'poor' areas in the city but in the countyside villages not so much...

City centre was fantastic when I went up there to see the Uni, don't know about the rest of it, though

I used to live in wigston which is about 10 miles from the town centre, that was quiet nice as is oadby, south wigston not so nice. There are some nice rural villages too round that area.

As for the town itself its a hole.

Come & live in or around Hinckley then you have a nice Blap down the M69 to & from work & you'll Easily do it in thirty, More like 15 really.
I moved up here just over 17 year ago & wouldn't live anywhere else now as it's the Perfect balance between country & town & being so Central you can get anywhere. The M69 is minutes away & the M1 is 5-10 mins & the M6 around 15-20 mins.

Also for 500 quid a month you'll get a nice 3 bed house on a decent estate with off road parking no probs at all.
You will also be just 5 minutes away from Mallory race track & 20-25 minutes away from Donnington.
If you'd like to know more just ask. :)

Got family who live in a small place outside leicester, think it's Barlestone, they've lived there as long as I can remember and seems ok for up there.

Also had/got family around Hinckley/Nuneaton.

i went to uni in leicester (for some reason that still escapes me to this day) and i absolutely hated it. there was always agro - the local whites hated the asians and they all hated the students. i was there for 7 years from 96 until 03 until i moved to a job outside leicester.

i lived off narborough road, which wasn't too bad at the end as we were pretty far up (before the railway bridge if you know where that is), but i'd also lived in various other parts that were lesser shades of ****.

they've redeveloped the city centre since i left (i rarely go back there these days) and it looks quite nice but i've no idea what it's like a night (it wasn't particularly pleasant when i was there).

oadby is ok as i the predominantly leicester uni area south east of the city (from what I'm told though avoid Evington). my advice would be live in nottingham and commute in if your considering a commute, alternatively live somewhere else :p
