If I were to purchase a car in the UK on UK plates, what would I have to do to export it?
I presume the DVLA need to be notified that it's being exported, but what else is there that needs to be done, both on the seller's and buyer's side?

Obviously the car must have valid tax, MOT and insurance [to be driven out of the country]

Cheers

It'll be staying within the EU.

How do insurance and the number plates work though?
The UK doesn't have 'export plates' as such. You can get XA - XF plates, but those are only for export outside the EU.

Who is the car registered to between purchase and sending off the ‘Notification of Permanent Export' to the DVLA?

You just leave it on the UK plates, i think its a year you have to get it re registered wherever its going.

Its still registered to you because you retain the main bit of the log book.

My mates got an english car in france with the plates made up to look like french plates and he gets french insurance and french crontrol technique (mot) every two years and I think he has sorned it over here

He also has a frnch car which he drives over here without having to pay UK road tax, win win

I don't live in the UK.

The plan is to purchase a car in the UK and then export it.
I want to keep it on UK plates for a while, but without a UK address I don't see what I can put down on the V5..

Well, I might have a UK address but it depends what the DVLA want for proof..
Do the DVLA even need proof of address when registering a new owner?

No they dont want any proof, they just send the log book to the address you supply.

Do you need proof of address for insurance?
That'd be whatever's on the V5 though isn't it? :o

You dont need proof of address for insurance either, just use the address you register it to.

Wow, that must be rather susceptible to fraud then.
Unless it's sent registered, and you need to be there to sign it..

Good stuff. Cheers :)

On a serious note, the fact everything is done by post is crazy, not to mention the fact that you don't need to physically go there with proof of address, etc.
Very good for the consumer, unless there is a problem..

I'm still totally undecided. I just wanted to see whether it's worth the trouble.
And it would appear that it probably is, as the effort here is minimal.

Travelling to the UK on the basis of hoping the seller can honestly describe the condition of the car over the phone is where the problems lie.

Indeed... you could write "Mickey Mouse, 123 Any Street" and send it off. OK you won't ever get any documents back but meanwhile you can do what you want with the car and then dump it by the side of the road when you're finished. I think its too laxed. Most other places you need to turn up at the police station or equivalent of DVLA with the seller, both show your IDs and get the papers filled in by an official.

Does the address on the insurance have to match the address on the V5?
Is there anything stopping you being the RK at one address, but having it insured at another?

Well the insurance will ask if you are the registered keeper, but it dosent matter if you insure at a different address.

All they are interested in is where the car is kept over night and what you use it for.

It'll be in a garage, just 500 miles away on the other side of the Channel :p

I'll get temporary insurance over here though. It's not worth running the risk insuring it in the UK and using it abroad, let alone having it insured at an address I don't actually live at.
If something does happen, I can't be bothered with all the faff. Insurance companies are quite happy to give you a reason not to pay out!

my step dad was going to do this with his renalt laguna, but it worked out cheaper to sell and buy new one over there. due to all travel fees and all other fees you would be charged for. its really not worth it unless you have a expensive car.
