Going to Edinburgh with my girlfriend tomorrow, we're only going for a few days. Just looking for some last minute ideas.

We've already talked about the Zoo, the Castle and maybe Dynamic Earth. Those familiar with Edinburgh, what other things should we check out?! also need some night entertainment ideas!

Thanks :D

There are a few free art galleries but are miles apart, modern and tate have an extraordinary walk to them though and very peaceful and can get good photos, leith waterway it's called, travels very long.

The modern museum also has free exhibits plus pay to get in ones.

Nightlife... depends where you're comfortable with. Cheap sticky places like Opium, hive have £1 drinks or there is pubs on rose street or the don't care how much you spend on george street. :p

Ah yea we were going to visit one of the art galleries. I like the sound of the modern and tate would be nice to visit those with her.

I think we'll be sticking more to the pubs, any particular ones you could recommend for a good pint?

We were there 3/4 weekends ago to see the Rocky Horror Show, great place!

There is Edinburgh dungeons, which is good for a laugh. The Zoo is built on a 45 degree angle, so make sure you have comfy shoes on. The Grassmarket has quite a few pubs and clubs and they are all open late. The buses run very frequently and are £1.20 each way, make sure you have the exact change!! Just watch, if it is a nightbus, then it is £3.50 (IIRC). The place does not sleep, but does have the BEST pie shop ever!

Visit the old town, Castle and palace if you take an interest in historical stuff. We have some great museums, the vaults, lots of tours etc.

Dynamic Earth is cool.

What are you into? Are you on a sightseeing trip or romantic or down for whatever?

Sounds awesome Philly. I'm quite excited to go as I have never been before!

How much was the admission to the dungeons?. I've made it clear to her I'll be dragging her round some old ass medieval stuff :p

How did you find the buses by the way, they seem very reasonable from what I've heard!

Biohazard it's a romantic/sightseeing trip :)

Modern and tate are a balls hair away from each other, if you're getting the train to haymarket makes getting to the galleries a lot easier, if waverley just longer.

Have you been before and are familiar with Edinburgh? I could get directions if you want or even meet you for 5 minutes, to show you the general way. :p

There's so many pubs in Edinburgh I'd find it hard to narrow it to one. :o

Edit - Grassmarket is good for pubs too.

buses are fine.

edinburgh is wrecked due to tram works though.

Dungeons are ok, bit tongue and cheek fun - maybe a tenner each? edit (ok, clearly been a long time since I've bothered then! £23!! :o)

Shame you didn't have more notice you could have tried to arrange to get down the old city under edinburgh, the vaults.

Ah yea the room was only booked last week on laterooms, is there no way I could do that then?

I guess booking is in advance?

Is the Zoo worth checking out over the castle say if we had to do one?

It's a lot better than it was concerning the trams. Still a bloody nuisance though.

Edit - I prefer the castle for the view and some old architecture and history.

Erp, I think it was £15 each, and we had voucheers which were in the back of one of those 'things to do in edinburgh' flyers.

If you are driving, ignore the sodding satnav, as mentioned, the tram works have screwed up the centre completely! One way systems now the other way around, turnings non existant, streets blocked off etc. And they love the speed cameras! there are millions of them*.

The buses are excellent, just be prepared with the exact change. Never made it to the castle.

Yea that was my point, a zoo's a zoo right? :p

Oh christ,

Yea I'm driving, 170 miles of it :p

Lovely drive up the A1. Really enjoyed it myself. Head off up the A19, just be prepared to pay the tunnel at the tyne. Just try to keep away at rush hour (applies to both the A1 and the A19)

where about do you stay?

i knew the 3 very well as a kid, one long bloody bus route that! :p

Grove Street next to Dundee Street-Fountain Park with my maw. And sometimes with my dad way up in the styx of Midlothian, Woodburn. :\ The 3 is the biggest PITA ever.
