Hi guys,

Bit of a lurker here so firstly, apologies for not posting more often!! Just developed a problem with my car so thought I'd ask here as there is a huge amount of knowledge!

Right...I have a 130i M-Sport with ~ 35k miles on the clock, which is an 06 plate. I've owned the car for @9 months without a problem, and it has FSH.

I was driving today at around 40mph and turned a left corner to the sound of what can only be described as when you're a kid and put paper between the spokes of your wheels - a horrible sound like a gear being stripped. The sound appeared to be coming from the rear passenger side wheel but I now think it's more in the middle of the rear of the car.

The sound doesn't happen at all when I accelerate (at any speed/gear) and doesn't happen much when I brake...BUT...when I downchange, holy moly the sound is gut churning. Weirdly, the car is driving fine but there is something seriously wrong!

So far I've jacked it up and looked underneath and can't find anything that shouldn't be there (Mechanical Engineer with a love for cars, so know a *little* bit.) Is there anything you guys can think of that it could be? Due to the fact it happens on down changes I figure it must be something thats susceptible to loading like some part of the diff or perhaps the C.V. Joint?

The car is booked into BMW for a WEEK FRIDAY (!!) under warranty and I'm really hoping that the warranty will cover it, as I'm skinted at the moment saving for a wedding!

If anyone can shine some light onto what they think it *could* be and what I should check I would be most grateful. Plus I have to drive it to work at the moment, which I am not happy about!!

Cheers,

Matt.

Is this an AUC? If so call BMW assist and complain about how you are worried you may damage the car if you continue to drive it.

Hey Fox,

What's an AUC? I am seriously worried about driving it as it sounds like some serious damage is going on, and the car is under a full extended warranty.

BMW Approved Used Car - I'm just guessing by the fact you've got full warranty. All BMW AUC cars include BMW Assist as part of the warranty.

If you've renewed the warranty yourself if you took the full maximum package you'll have BMW Assist as well.

This is BMW Assists problem if you have it :)

Some good news! Rang BMW Emergency Assistance (only number I could find) and described the problem - guy said that there was someone on the way and would be with me within 90 minutes! He won't be able to do anything, but I guess he can verify it's really not working (!) and get me a replacement or the like.

Cheers Fox!

I guess the fact they are coming means you have BMW Assist. They'll provide you with a hire car until your dealer has a courtesy car normally :)

Sadly mine was a Vauxhall Meriva :(

Sorry to bump this but, THANKS FOX!!

The chap who came out (after 35mins!) was fantastic! We went for a short drive in the car and he agreed it sounded shocking and in his own words...expensive! Anyway, no jack in the car etc. so I couldn't check anything, so he lifted it up and we both got under it and seen no problems....till I took the handbrake on and spun a wheel and it sounded rough.....the heat shield for the exhaust had somehow bended itself up about 5mm and was rubbing against the prop shaft flange where it connects to the diff! 2 seconds of bending it back and boom, problem solved! How the shield had bent I have no idea but thankfully a seemingly expensive repair turned out to be virtually nothing :)

Thanks ever so much Fox, I would have had no idea to have called BMW Assist and it saved my bacon as I was *really* scared to drive it to work tomorrow!

This forum is simply unbelievable, so many people thankful to help.

Many thanks to all, particularly Fox (as always you always have sound advice!!)

The muppet behind the wheel,

Matt.

You say nice car...which it is...except for the windows rattle like, well I don't know!! No matter how much grease I put on, ARGH they rattle. Thank god I can chuck the iPod on and forget about it!!

Car itself, not sure if you've driven one, but I used to race in KTM when I was a bit younger and it's wilder than a go-kart on slicks in the wet. Never thought I'd say it but jeez, it's so tail happy! TC does a good job but hmmmz! Maybe I should've gone for the S3 when I bought it!

Anyway, huge thanks Fox.

Cheers,

Matt.

By rattle do you mean the windows creak a bit, like a pirate ship? :p

If so, try lowering the window ever so slightly, does it go away?

If so, you need copius amounts of GummiPfledge once a week :(

Basically I totally cleaned the car a few weeks back with clay, G200 hand polisher, wax etc. and it looked gorgeous....then the rattling started :( Apparently it's a common fault that after you give it a serious going over the rubber dries out and greasing it stops the rattle - nothing stops it now though. Sounds like I've got a thousand cans stuffed in the door wells :/

The E46 saloon windows rattle after some time as well against the frame/seals but only on dry days.

It's a feature!

S3 means boring 4wd grip :p

What tyres are you running on it?

Yeah my passenger side window started rattling recently, only when it's dry or cold though. Drives me insane :(
