*Official OMG I got my 460 thread*

I have just ordered one of these cards to switch from my old 8800 GT as I have spent a long time waiting for nividia to bring out a good deal like this. I was tempted a few months ago to buy a 5850 but I held back because I have had horrible experiences with ATI cards in the past.

I am happy that I waited a while longer now :)

(And yeah first post here)

I haven't over-clocked a gpu since ati rage fury days, as long as I keep the card under 100c just keep raising the core by about 5/10 mhz right?

Not to keen on raising the voltage atm.

Do I use vantage to check for stability?

Just bump up to core by 10mhz or so, and then use something like Furmark, or play a game and look for aritfacts, freezes, any sort of problem!!

Sorry to go a bit off topic, I read something about there also being some kind of sound card on the gtx460, I'm not sure if its just hdmi audio pass through, or an actual sound card though

If this is true would I still need a separate sound card once I get the 460? (I.e is the sound card on 460 any good) and I'm guessing the sound would pass through the hdmi, and I would be able to feed my Z5500 speakers from the optical out of my tv

Finally got my card, arrived at about 6:45pm...

Anywho, yeah the default fan profile is nasty. Quiet idle, under load it is rather noisy.

However i've slapped MSI Afterburner on, changed the curve so it's 40% @ Idle, and ramps up to 55% @ 80C, it is now inaudible in my case.

Testing will come tomorrow as I really can't be bothered now lol

The gainward gtx460 goes like hell, golden sample card looks like it might be the one ill get, nice factory overclock, and what seems like a better cooler for extra £10 (£210)

Currently running my 460 @ 850mhz Core and 1700mhz Shader Clock.

Are the core and shader clocks always linked as when I raise the core the shader clock raises also and afterburner doesn't seem to want let me unlink them, is this normal?

A shader clock of 1700 is pretty high right?, the regular GTX480's shaders are set @ 1400mhz.

Well i'm sending mine back, it is far too noisy at stock fan settings, and when the fan profile is tweaked so it is bareable it's hitting 90C+ in things like Metro 2033.

So just not happy with that.

Shame because performance is excellent. :(

I cant understand how the reviews said it was quiet??

I've no idea, but it really really isn't, it's right up there with my old 3870X2 for noise.

Way way louder than the GTX260.

Don't know what the other coolers are like on the other GTX460's, but the Palit cooler is terrible.

Great performance, terrible cooler. Such a shame :(

I'll be interested to hear what people have to say about other brands coolers, as i'd still love to have a GTX460, just not with that jet engine of a cooler.

That's terrible.

Would love a 460. Seems just the right price/performance ratio although i think i'd probably watercool it.

@ any owners: Do the coolers cool just the core or are they dealing with the memory chips/power section too?

gt

I just don't understand why card makers do it, as you say no doubt there'll be 3rd party coolers than cooler better at a fraction of the noise in a few weeks.

Why card makers don't just use coolers like that in the first place is anyone's guess. I wouldn't mind paying a tenner extra if it meant my card wasn't annoying as hell.

The Vapor-X cards show that people are willing to pay for quiet, just give me something like that on a GTX460 and i'll snap it up!

Anywho, for now i'm just going to use my mobo GPU and wait and see what happens with other brand GTX460's.

Apparently the MSI radial cooler one is meant to be quite good.

The Palit one just cools the core, memchips are uncovered.

The power section has it's own heatsink block that catches air that is blowing from the main GPU fan.
