TV / PS3 5.1 Audio Confusion

I have a Sony 5.1 system. From that I had an optical cable which went to a switch box. From the switch box one optical cable went to the PS3 and another to the TV.

I dont have Sky so I understand the TV will only be 2.0. Question is, what set-up will allow sound through the TV to pass through the speakers, but then also 5.1 sound through the PS3 when its turned on - all without having a switch box.

Seems like a stupid problem and Im overlooking the obvious?

How about just optical for the PS3, then red/yellow stereo for the TV? However does that then mean I'll still hear the TV even when I switch the TV over to its HDMI mode for the PS3?

Hi,

I'm not entirely sure what you mean (wording fail :p) but here's what I do:

1) HDMI from PS3 to TV
2) Optical from PS3 to amplifier
3) Enable "Dual audio output" option in the PS3 audio settings

When you want 5.1, then turn on your receiver and turn the volume to zero on the TV. When you want 2.0 only, just turn off your receiver and turn the volume up on your TV.

Simples :)
