• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

Dual 460 coming this year!

With the current architecture they can't make it faster than a 5970 without breaking the 300w barrier which I think is a big issue.

5970 is ~10% faster than SLI GTX460 at stock and uses a lot less watts and the 5970 has a TDP of 300W

As the link said though, they could increase the amount of shaders, which would make it more competitive. As mentioned though, Ati won't be sitting on their laurels, with the SI refresh due by the end of the year.

More shaders though is more power so unless they break 300w it still sounds like a fairy tale to me.

You are right, at any point ATI can unleash their next gen and put the smack down on Nvidia

They are already breaking the 300w limit and getting laughable performance for it.

It would make sense to build this card and it shouldn't take long to cobble together a dual GPU card.

No they aren't, GTX480 and GTX295 are both under 300W

Only makes sense if it is at least 10% faster than GTX480 and is 300W TDP

Maxed out 480..insane

Its mental isn't it. 330watt and a HD5870 is right on it.

I had just about made up my mind to pick up gtx460's until this. Guess I'll wait a little longer.

If they are going to try and fight the 5970 I don't think it will be long before solid leaks start to do the rounds.

You can't just double up a single cards power draw to calculate what a x2 card would use. If that were the case a 5970 would be more than 300w, 5850's use 150w a piece, and the 5970 uses chips at the same clocks that have more shaders and texture units.

Nvidia bin chips for voltage individually which ATI don't do, so there is a pretty good chance they can make a GF104x2 card that stays within 300w.

EDIT: Actually scratch what i said about the ATI not binning for voltage, they don't do that for their single GPU cards but i don't know for sure if they didn't specially bin for the 5970, seeing how close they are to breaking spec they might have done.
