Games with 'Artificial Intelligence' you thought was good?

None really off the top of my head tbh.

Half-Life I guess and im sure there were some others were I did say "you sneaky little...". Just can't think of any that stand out though.

The bots (especially the survivor bots) on left for dead 2 are retarded. They are so stupid its beyond belief. The infected aren't so bad.

I'm not talking about AI agents, I'm talking about the AI Director.

As far as intelligence goes, most AI agents for most games are only as clever as they've been set to be at that point.

The really interesting ones are the ones that adapt to the player across the whole of the game, rather than just a moment in time.

Just to say, i meant the first Far Cry, the second Far Cry appears to have the AI being slightly thick.

Metal Gear Solid 1

...Before the memory card switch on the Psycho mantis fight ^^

Thought that was a controller switch?

Far Cry was good especially on hardest

Never found it that hard but the choppers where annoying I agree.

I did a piece on AI for my thesis earlier this year. I covered dynamic difficulty adjustment (i.e balancing to the players skill level).

I am currently writing a dissertation on game balancing and focusing on Torchlight. I have already done a small essay on it and markers loved it (got a first).

The AI for the bots in CS:Source is horrible, I don't know if they use the same AI for Half Life 2 or not.

Start a game against easy bots on CS:S and get into a fight with any opposing bot, during the firefight, hide round a corner/wall, and then come out again, the bot will instantly headshot you every single time you do this. (Exception: If a bot on your team starts firing on the opposing bot, it will switch targets and not headshot you.)

There's also an annoying "bot catchup mode" where the more kills you get without dying, the more likely you are to be one-shotted from half way across the map.

Aye, I got a first for my degree as well. The markers found it very interesting. :)

If you want some names of good papers on the subject let us know and I'll have a look trough my old links if you want.

There's an article in this month's PC Gamer about the bloke who re-coded their AI for SupCom2. That might be worth you taking a look.

Excellent, cheers for that. Not sure Id be able to claim the cost back from the company but what the heck! Call me dedicated :D

This is an issue that appears to affect quite a few games where the AI has the ability to get no matter what. Pretty sure there is a sniper game thats just come out with everyone complaining that the AI is able to pick you off super humanly. This is something I am keen in noting to avoid!

I remember Far Cry having tough enemies, but I hated the helicopters, they could always see you and follow even if you went into thick jungle areas.

That's my main criticism of Crysis. You can be moving through the woods cloaked and the helicopters still follow you.

Half-life

I thought I was the only one that thought that Half-Life AI was far superior to Half-Life 2 and pretty much any game that has come out since.

Half-Life 2 I remember them running at me until I killed them - and yet this was recently voted the best game ever

In Half-Life  I remember the soldiers using cover, flanking me and using grenades to flush me out. Truly the best game ever! I can't wait for the Black Mesa conversation to come out - just the AI is HL AI.

GoW/GoW2 were quite good, locust use flanking/melee rush quiet effectively. GoW2 when they had chainsaws made them quite lethal if they go close.

Team mate AI could little 'wtf?' sometimes.

Arma 2 when using certain mods

GL4
ZEUS_AI
SLX

Or when using mission scripts such as UPSMON / DAC. The AI becomes highly fluid and will flank you from various angles based on the men it has, or if you're spotted in tanks they will begin to mine the roads. They can also call reinforcements etc as they need them or fall back to plan a new attack.
