Hey guys, I'm looking to get myself a Toshiba L650-11D or a Sony VAIO e-series. The Sony works out cheaper than the L650 (£710 vs. £807.36 but the L650 does offer a 3year carry-in warranty service), with a bigger screen resolution (Sony = 1920x1080. L650=1600x900...both have a 17.3" screen).

Just a bit sceptical of the differing opinions on the reputation of both companies and the products themselves. So would like all unbiased opinions/advice in regards to both these laptops and manufacturers. Thanks :)

What are you needs and wants in a laptop?

I own a Toshiba c650 wich is the same model as the l650 but with less powerful components and I'd recommend the toshiba over the sony. I'd say go to a store and try out the keyboard and touch pad and make your mind up that way...

mostly the basic stuff (processing, browsing, downloading etc.) but I know I will eventually (sooner than I think actually) start using it for watching films, TV, maybe even (if I can) connect my PS3 to it...

Then you don't really need to spend more than £400 to that, You already have a beast a desktop pc for gaming.

I can do all you mentioned on my Toshiba c650 which I bought for £370. I can even stream 1080p blu-ray quality movies to my ps3 on it.

lol I appreciate the concern but I'm obviously looking around for a laptop for a reason otherwise as you quite rightly said so, the desktop is a beast and does more than I could wish for ;)

as for the C650, I am looking around but just simply ain't finding the specs I would want that I'm getting from the L650 and VAIO (i5, HD 5650, 500GB HDD, 17" screen, Blu-Ray...) I know I know, I'm probably being agonisingly picky and precise with my requests and checklist here and I'm sorry for that but hey... :p

lol. I am know you feel. I was also about to spend £600 on a L650 because I wanted power over usablity. I have a gameing pc at home(ATI 5850, 4gb ram, AMD phenom II 955 ect) and because of that, decided to go for a mid range laptop.

Also, screen size plays a huge part. You wouldn't think a few inches would make a difference but it does. To me, "17 laptops look bulky and are pretty heavy to carry around. "15 inch is perfect for mobility and placing on your lap.

I'd still recommend the Toshiba as I have used both at a shop and prefered the feel and look of the Toshiba over the sony vaio.
