Hi there after a quick visit to a camera shop near me they had a nikon d200 with battery grip for £250, now this is second hand any while I was hoping to upgrade my d50 to a new camera I simply haven't got the funds

would you take the risk on a second hand d200?
Is 250 quid reasonable for the camera and grip? (I don't know the amount of shutter releases at this point)
will iq be any better bearing in mind I will be using the kit 18 - 55 mm nikon lens I got with the d50 and a sigma 55 - 200?

Thanks for any advice

It sounds a good price; although given its a 'camera' shop you also have to question why it is quite so cheap.

Here is one on ebay ...

A bit more expensive and without battery grip.

I very much doubt they have got the price wrong. It seems a good hundred pound cheaper than it should be, which may well be down to the amount of previous use its had.

If a deal sounds too good to be true ....

The price is maybe a bit too good to be true but it's a reasonable upgrade in most ways, higher resolution, faster, handles better and has better AF. On the other hand it'll be bigger and heavier, don't underestimate that...

That is indeed very cheap for a D200. They are normally £390-450 for the camera alone. Better check how many shots it has taken. But yeah, it's a good upgrade, but as bigredshark says...it's a very heavy upgrade compared to the plastic of the D50.

These prices do happen.

Seen a 30D + battery grip from a reputable user on talkphotography go for £230 inc. delivery :\

just phoned the shop, the guy couldnt give me a number for the shutter releases but did comfirm the price tho im thinking that its purely the camera body + grip

im assuming im going to need to get batteries , charger etc seperate but at a quick glance the hannel ones i have for the grip of my d50 will do as will the charger gonna grab this on the opinions given above, thanks lads!

I'd really check the number of shutter actuations, it's not like it'll take long and I believe the D200 was only tested to 100,000, though plenty of people report seeing 150,000 or so...

In terms of whether it's a worthwhile upgrade I'd say yes, and especially for that price. You can find out the number of actuations through some hex code in a RAW file I think.

I too upgraded to a D200 from a D50 a couple of years ago and it was worthwhile (as I couldn't afford a D300). The handling is really great and the AF is loads better. The only downside is the size and weight. Make sure you're happy to lug it around all day if that's what you do.

Edit: the noise handling is the same as the D50, expect nothing!

after calling back down i payed for the camera and brought it home on the condition that i can check the times the shutter has been fired as the rubber grip is well wore so fingers crossed

sadly there is a slight difference between my spare batteries and they wont fit :( so have only one battery to play with... ho hum!

50k is relatively low. A lot of people seem to keep D200's till well over 100-150k. 100k as mentioned is the benchmark really.
