New road tax system

It's not the first time I've heard that proposal, or at least very similar ones - I suspect fox isnt the first to come up with it

I work with a Hammersmith & Fulham Tory counsellor and I've been saying for years that they should get rid of the car excise duty and start taxing fuel. As already said you then pay directly on your actual emissions and you get rid of the problem of people driving around with no tax.

I'd be very, very surprised if the idea of replacing VED with an increase in fuel duty hasn't already been discussed. The party think-tanks dream up these sorts of things all the time :)

Read about numerous times over the years, not a new concept at all. Trouble is that it's the only fair way to do it, so it'll never see the light of day.

I personally think that the change is just too great that none of the parties want to take the risk of changing something that's been running for years.

Increase cost in transportation of goods will be seen on the prices we pay for goods such as food.

That's okay because I'll save money from the tax.

(0.1 / (MPG / 4.5)) x Miles Per Year

(0.1 / (30 / 4.5)) x 3000

Works out as £45 for me, which is £100 cheaper than the current system.

The only reason imo to have tax discs is untaxed / abandoned cars removed from the road, it's almost like having a best before date in the windscreen.

We could change this disc to one of insurance like the French do

Actually, I've just realised another benefit to Fox's suggestion, especially relevant in this age of austerity. Think of the money saved when the civil servants who currently work in this area are sacked!

It wouldnt work.
It would mean people woulnt be able to see what they pay yearly for road tax. The government would then increase road tax but no one would complain because it would look like just the normal rise in fuel prices that we see daily. It would be a sure fire way for the government to raise taxes with no objections as no one would see it.

Otherwise, I agree

The government have at their disposal thousands of ways to raise taxes and not have you see it. Giving them one more will really make no difference. It's not like they don't raise VED as they please, anyway.

I like the idea, another benift nobody has mentioned... all the scumb that don't currently pay car tax, won't be able to avoid it any more, which also means the police wont have to waste time stopping cars for no tax!!!!

Alternativly:
Scrap car tax as it it is currently, instead, each year when you go for your MOT, they can look at what miles you have covered in the last year and then bill you a set amount based on your own cars specific manufacture's fuel/co2 details for your model, which you coul dpay in installments over the next 6-12 months...... Only downside is you still get scumb that dont MOT their car.

No, the more miles you do, the more tax you pay....via fuel.
Road tax serves no purpose at all. If I have an M5 I would get raped via fuel fuel (65p a litre or whatever it is now). **** road tax it is just squeezing more money out of us.

"clocking" is not that complicated, especially on older cars. I'm sure there'd be a lot of people to try this, and doing all that "math" will incurr extra costs/complications that can be avoided via the tax on fuel system.

I was thinking of Fox's suggestion a couple of weeks ago as well, seems to me pretty fair, easy to implement and fail-proof.
win all the way, really

Just say the average person does 12,000 miles a year at 30mpg.

400 gallons of fuel used to do this.

1818 litres.

Say you want to average £250 in tax per head.

Divide 250 by 1818 litres of fuel to get 0.14p extra per litre.

Am I doing something crazy wrong in my post football haze as this sounds quite reasonable?
