If he's talking about the same issue that plagues the E39, E46 and E60, which I imagine he is, the reason behind it is as I've explained. There are about 20 different ideas of why it happens and no real fix. BMW have constantly redesigned the seals to no avail.
 
There's a lot of seals to replace to find the offending one - plus, where does one get them :p

Well you specifically mentioned the creaking, I was talking about the rattling window which I assumed could have been down to a badly fitted or loose rubber seal.

Our steering wheel's been creaking for as long as I can remember.
It's rubbing against something but **** knows what.

A few rattles coming from the rear parcel shelf too. And it's only done 40,000 miles. Low mileage ***!
