I am starting to get to grips with intel sockets but I have noticed that there are 2 socket types for i7 chips. Which is the better/more recent. I am planning a very high end build (£1500) and don't know which socket I should be going for. Could someone enlighten me please :D

Thanks

The 1156 is the "lower end" with only dual channel memory and slightly worse for multi video cards IIRC. The 1366 socket has Tri Channel and better multicard performance (not to say the other is bad, just the second is better).

Your current system isn't bad, I'd actually consider holding off with such a budget if I were you, and wait for Sandy Bridge to be released, which is yet another Intel CPU which'll replace the current I3, I5 and I7.

It'll also be on a different socket type (shocking with intel that they're switching again I know :p).

At the risk of derailing the thread, it's more different than better/worse (the actual performance difference between the 2 is negligible).

I agree though - hold off on upgrading your rig. 1366 and 1156 are being killed off pretty soon, so wait for the replacement.

Do we know when this new socket is going to come? Its just I am in the process of selling my rig (as I will probably get more now than I will when the radeon 6xxx series come out)? I also read somewhere that the new socket would only be for i3 and i5.....is this true?

Cheers

The new socket should be out by the end of this year, or the very beginning of next. It's probably not worth changing now, unless you can find some good bargains.

I just cast an eye over your sig, and it seems kinda pointless dropping £1500 on a new rig now with that spec...

Stick it int bank, then in a year or two when your current rig is old and useless, it's time for a new build. :p

No - new Intel chips will be released in 2 socket varietys, one like the 1156 and one like 1366.

Either way, the new line of CPU's will both require new sockets. Now you're going to ask what the performance boost shall be - I can't answer you exactly... I've heard anything from between 10 - 30 percent clock for clock, but with more cores and higher clock speeds. With your system I'd wait, and I'm going to wait personally too.

id also wait to see what amd's new bulldozer chip is like, looks very promising, sandy bridge was quickly redesigned to be higher performance to try and counter amds new chip, so maybe its a cracking design, I wont be upgrading till both the new chips are out now.

True - people are forgetting about bulldozer.

Lets hope AMD come out with some new stuff thats faster than INTEL

Bit Bored of INTEL and its constant speed win over AMD

We need AMD to fight back with some good new chips.

I personally couldn't care who creates the fastest chip - I just am itching for a 8GB of ram + something faster than my Q6600.
