Whats Leicester like? New job opportunity ..

Leicester? Ever been to India...

:o

I have no idea whereabouts I went in Leicester the last time I was there, but me and my cousin were like outcasts with everyone staring. I don't think I could walk for more 20 seconds without seeing a gold jewellery shop as well. :p

I have been to Leicester once to see friends and first thing I saw was a homeless getting kicked out of the newsagents we were in for trying to steal booze.

With a person prepared to do a commute of 30 minutes, I challenge you to find anywhere in the entire country that hasn't got a nice area near it (albeit probably bloody expensive).

There are some fairly well off, none-scummy people everywhere even working in nasty places. These nice folk tend to find a nice place outta town, buy up, and outprice the ******.

I'd even except a job in Bradford if the money was right, as I'd bet my bottom dollar that - again - with 30 minutes bike-riding you could effectively find somewhere darn nice to actually live ..

Where I am (Surbiton kind of area) it is £900 for a 'not that bad' 1 bedroom flat.

You live in Suburbiton? :)

We used to live in Wimbledon, but moved a year go, we still have friends in your neck of the woods though ;)

Just a thought - if you own your property, you could consider renting it out? You aren't tied down that way - perhaps something to consider?

TBH I live in a place near Surbiton but not as nice but cheaper!

I know a guy who moved away from Wimbledon a year ago! PLEASE don't tell me you recently got married or that'll freak me out!

Both Melton Mowbray and Market harborough are about 30 minutes from leicester city center, and both are nice enough towns.

Leicester itself is average. Nothing great, but there's worse cities around.

Leicester isn't too bad.

Nice city center, lots of nice places to eat and shop. The Cinema is nice, it's got a decent night life (suffers from the same thing lots of cities suffer from though)

The student life is massive during term time.

It's a very mulitcultural city, there are loads of great places to each dotted all over.

I don't "love it" I do like it though :)

As your looking for somewhere a bit furthur out, it's gets nicer as I imagine a lot of cities are like this.

leicester is fine. Reading some of these posts i wondered if there was another leicester that everyone was describing!

I lived in the west end (off Narborough Road) for 3 years and you still get a feel of community there. The place you've posted is right near the train station, and car parking is limited - bike parking though i'd bet you'd find a lampost to chain it too...

Villages to live in? The Langtons are LOVELY but expensive, anywhere 25 miles away is doable in 30mins on a bike, and 25 miles away gives you a LOT of opportunities for lovely villages. I grew up in Burnage, which is pretty nice and a 30min ride away, but for small villages there are plenty nearby - shortlist a few and post them on here.

Some nice houses (and perfect location for you) near oadby/leicester race course - but the other side of the A6. i was in halls there, and they're all massive manor houses - pretty nice.

I live in a place called Enderby which is about 10 mins away from the M1 and close to a shopping centre called fosse park - which isn't too bad.

It is about 20 mins away from the city centre, and is quite a nice place to live - Narborough also has some very decent houses, along with Thurlaston. they are all away from the centre - and would be ideal I'm guessing :)

Leicester isn't great tbh, as with all cities it depends where you go, having gone there nearly everyday for college until I finished earlier this year I can tell you I won't miss it.

I live about 20 minutes away in a very small village, nice if you like that sort of thing.

As someone said, Market Harborough is a nice place, I grew up there for 9 years before we moved here.

Yep, I grew up & currently live in Market Harborough :) It's 20 minutes if you drive, 5-10 minutes if you take the train. Market Harborough is generally where all the villages in the area go for their shopping too. It's got a decent bus service too, I think it's the X3 that goes every hour between MH and Leicester plus as I mentioned, its own train station (but it's horribly expensive)

It's quite funny seeing a couple of other Harborough OcUKers in this thread.

And God yes, avoid Braunstone. There's plenty of people actually packing heat there. Just give you an idea of how horribly dodgy that place is.

:D

I don't live to far from Braunstone, I went to school there and can dismiss this :p

They don't pack "heat" and it's like a lot of places, got a far worse reputation. Okay some parts aren't "nice" but it's certainly not some war torn, drug fuelled ghetto.

I live in New Parks at the moment, it's a **** hole lol. I used to live on the bottom of Hinckley Road, just after Braunstone gate, about 5-10 minute walk into town.. not a bad area. :)

Used to live near Melton Mowbray, heartily recommended. Lot's of nice villages there, I used to live in Waltham on the Wolds.

The train to Leicester is just once an hour and not 100% reliable, so caution needed there. The bus takes an hour so not recommended.

The railway station at Leicester has a car park, not sure how much it is. There must be other long stay carparks in that area as it is mostly offices on that side of the inner ring road. Motorcycles would be free anyway surely?

Edit: Rural Leicestershire and Rutland are 2 very pleasant examples of our fine English countryside, a fine choice.

Charnwood Forest area is quite up market: Newtown Linford/ Woodhouse Eves etc and not too bad for commuting. Many small villages around that would suit your purpose but you need to spend a few days driving around to see what is best for you.

I don't want to start a war but you'll find that there are a lot of Indians in the city; having experienced Pakistani and Bangladeshi in Bradford since moving North years ago, I'd choose Indians every time.

For where you are working (behind the train station) it will cut your commute a lot if you can minimize time spent on the inner ring road so imo go for SE Leicester(shire).

If you want a flat short term there will be plenty £500-£800pm depending on size, parking etc. on/near London Road in the Stoneygate/Clarendon Park area. No more than 10mins walk from some shops and if you are willing to filter, then the commute will be I would guess less than ten mins each morning on a motorbike.

Bit further out is Oadby, plenty of big houses out there. Still commute down London Road, add another 5-10 mins to travel time. Parts of this are a proper rich area (Try Google streetview on Knighton Grange Road)

If you want a real village as some have mentioned there are plenty in Market Harborough direction. Again add another 10 or so mins in the morning.

Yea if I get this thing (job - last interview next week, only 2 candidates left, employer told me in confidence I'm currently the strongest) then it is a four stage plan

1) Sit in a travel lodge for a month on me tod to see if I can stick the work and the whole vice.
2) If yes, hunt round for a £800 place for a 12 month rental, get it, shift wifey up there (she doesn't work so not difficult). Leave London house empty (don't rent it out)
3) If all looks groovy after 10 months and I honestly feel I no longer need an 'escape route' back to London - flog London pad and buy house in ruralish village nearish Leicester (plenty of suggestions of places above). Budget around £600,000 (smacking great mortgage of over half that, but this will be my 'keeper proper family home big enough for both us and potentially a couple of teenage kids in the future.) Basically nice enough to feel happy with my lot in life if we never ever move again.
4) Live happily ever after away from the capital, but still having a fairly comfortable middle class life enjoying quiet life but with city nearby for when we want city stuff, eating out, cinema etc.

I'm kind of excited. Nervous as it will be 5 years until I have proper mates up there as good as I have in London, but excited. Relocation and change of life is always a tough slog but possible. I'll keep you posted.
