Galaxy S / HTC Desire

You can install launcher pro from the market place if you don't like the interface I do the same on my Desire as I not overly keen on sense UI and I think most do with there's.

Well the differences are as follows:

Screen: Samsung has 4.0" Super AMOLED, Desire has 3.6" AMOLED, possibly soon to be S-LCD
CPU: Samsung has 1Ghz Hummingbird CPU and PowerVR GPU, Desire has 1Ghz Snapdragon CPU and no dedicated GPU
RAM: Bout the same
SD: Galaxy has 8/16GB in built internal memory and a slot, Desire doesnt have built in card but has a slot
Build: Galaxy apes the iPhone from the front, is very light, doesn't feel too flimsy and is very thin for a smartphone BUT is totally plastic. Desire has a nice rubberised metal case and its own style and is frankly the better of the two appearance wise
Camera: Desire has a flash and 5 Mpixel, Galaxy has no flash and 5 Mpixel, but its pretty good in low light for me.
OS: Galaxy has Android 2.1 with Samsung TouchWiz 3.0, Desire has Android 2.1 with HTC Sense, both can be modified as you wish and both are due a Froyo 2.2 update, the Desire will probably get it first.
Battery Life: Both will probably give you around a day of usage (i.e. WiFi on for some of it, GPS on), maybe 2 if you arn't a "fiddler". I have been re-charging my Galaxy overnight though.
Multi-touch: The Galaxy's multitouch hardware is definately better than the Desires, though for the very vague usage it currently gets in Android (pinch to zoom) it's hard to notice.

Other things of note: the Desire has a nice optical trackpad, the Galaxy doesn't.

Really though, both are very fast, both are very pleasant to use and both have their merits. I *think* the Desire still pips it for me just because its build quality is better and it has a flash, but I have a Galaxy S purely cos Orange (who i'm with) havent had stock for weeks, and still don't!

I'm very happy with the Samsung, but either are great phones.

ultimately, if you can, go and have a play.

EDIT: Forgot to say, as both have Android, really both have the same basic functionality. They can both tether afaik, both have the same Android camera software, which is very comprehensive, data/email and web is what Android was born to do, audio and mp3 playback, again no worries and there are literaly thousands of games, free and not, on the market. Though in theory the Galaxy may be superior here for well written 3D stuff due to its hardware GPU.

i agree and went for the desire, as it just felt better in my hand, as daft as that sounds, but both are cracking phones

Bought a Galaxy S for my wife the other day and it is indeed awesome. The screen on it is fantastic but I think HTC Sense is better than the Touchwiz overlay from Samsung. Comparing it to my Desire I think it feels a bit plasticky but it's so light and the screen seems really big. Both nice though.

Lack of flash is a big minus for me, and not for taking pictures.

I use the Flashlight app on my HD2 far too often, and it would suck not having an insta-torch any more.

Weird. Was in my local T Mobile store yesterday playing with both the Desire and the Galaxy. They had none in stock for sale but I was told to call back tomorrow as a delivery was expected.

Called this afternoon and was told that a Desire had came in with the delivery but only one. However, they can't sell me it today as the manager has to "book in" the delivery and he is on a day off.

Honestly, you would think shops would actually want to sell you products or am I just being picky here?.

Not true, the Snapdragon has an Adreno 200 GPU (which is a rebranded AMD mobile GPU after Qualcomm bought AMD's mobile division). It's just that the PowerVR SGX540 that samsung are using is significantly more powerful (although not as much as that quake 2 video makes it look)

No I have realised this sine I wrote that comment.

I have found a nice little comparison benchmark since, it's just an OpenGL test suite, but their website lets you do comparisons between devices which is quite interesting to see.

Just back from the local Voda store where I had a play with the 2 phones. I still can't decide which one I prefer.
The screen on the Galaxy is amazing but the phone is almost a bit too big and feels a bit on the light side. The Galaxy seemed snappier to use and more responsive when flicking between screens and did I mention the screen?!?
Thought the desire felt better in the hand, a bit more solid and more like the Magic shape I'm used to. Plus it has the hard keys which I think I would miss.
I also wonder about future support. Will there be as many ROMs etc for the Samsung?
God. I'm so confused.

As usual, after browsing the available phones, I'm in the position of saying 'nice, but...' and 'would buy right now!!!1 if it had X and Y'

For the cost of a galaxy S it needs to have a keyboard for me. I could go desire for cheaper, but I don't know if i could live with that knowing about the S. I'll wait for the Galaxy S Pro, and see what else is around it that time. For the cost of these phones, it's possible to get a half decent laptop.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you m8. I had made my mind up last night that it was going to be a Galaxy S for me today. Then watched some more comparison vids on both it and the Desire late last night and confuzled myself once again!.

So this morning I had made my mind up again ( lol!! ) that I was going to get the Desire. Then when I called T Mobile in town they said they only had one in the delivery they got today but could not sell me it. If they had said "Yeah, we have one in stock, feel free to come in for it just now" I would be sat here tonight with it in front of me.

And then there's always that wee voice niggling away at the back of my head saying "Wait till the 22nd for the iPhone 4 to hit the T Mobile stores". But I'm still wary of the Apple option because of the tech issues with it. This announcement they are making tomorrow will go some way to helping me make my mind up. Then again, I'll just be back at Desire vs Galaxy S again after that if I don't like the sound of the announcement!!. :p

In fact, I'm wondering if I should just stick with my 2G iPhone for now and be a bit more patient. Although I'm not sure what new smartphones are waiting in the wings for the next few months?.

Had the Galaxy since yesterday and the Desire for a few months my thoughts so far.

The screen on the S is in a different league to the one on the Desire even outside i can use it fine in direct sun i was shocked at how much better it is visible outside, lets not beat around the bush the Desire isn't good outside anyone will tell you this and i never noticed the pink tinge it had until i loaded up the htc as a test on the S.

Screen size, it's always nice to have the bigger screen and the colours are so much better on the S as everyone knows.

The feel in the hand is fine it is very light compared to the Desire and much thinner but no problem for me, having buttons in different positions is taking some time to get used to, i will be getting a moulded back case for it and screen protector.

I love the fact i can play so many different video files out the box i have tried flv, avi even tried a mkv sample and it played it fine just i never got any sound from it, something to look into for sure.

I took some quick videos yesterday on both phones, the Desire is running the 720p rom and i tried it with flash on and off and found it best with it on, this was in average light at best as i had curtains closed, the video camera on the S wins hand down for me its in a different league.

Galaxy S

Desire

There does seem to be a small issue with the S at the moment, just sometimes it stalls/lags i know there is a fix out for it on the xda android forums so will try it later on, so far its a lovely
phone to use i actually like using the touchwiz side of it thought i would hate it but so far not installed launcher pro etc, will mess more and keep updating.

Another video i took today in town, mega impressed with the video quality.

Just having a read around this morning - still trying to make my mind up. I had pretty much settled on getting the Desire but then remembered about the AMOLED shortage. According to this the latest batches are shipping without the AMOLED screen which is a big disappointment.
