over the weekend I was in town, there was a heavily pregnant woman sat in the beer garden, chain smoking and drinking for several hours. When she left she could hardly stand up

being a keyboard warrior I grumbled about this and said nothing

Do you think

1) the pub should be serving her (i think they should have refused)
2) someone should have said something (I feel I should have)
3) the state should Legislate on this (dodgey ground but i think it should be)

I'm all for letting people do as they please, she could drink until she vomited if she was not with child.

surely she is dammaging the baby? Can a pregnant woman do this as a 1 off and not cause any dammage?

She's entitled to do what she wants, baby or not.

Stupid **** in my opinion but we can't force her other wise. Funnily enough that's why we see new warning on spirit bottles saying don't drink whilst pregnant.

Let's hope she does the kid a favour and has a miscarriage.

^comment was made in anger, don't take "too" seriously.

However, it really depends on your views on the child. Do you view the child as being property of the mother? Or is the child a completely independent human being, possessing freedoms and liberties just like us?

If the child is just the mother's property, then yes she can do what she likes. If the child has its own rights, then I think she should not be allowed to do things to seriously harm or alter the resulting life of the child. Either way, she's unbelievably stupid.

Oh, and are you sure she wasn't just a wide load :p

that wouldn't be doing the baby a favour as it has obviously almost completely developed if she was heavily pregnant.

She sounds like a stupid selfish cow though and doesn't deserve the right to bear children imo. Poor kid!

Well, the smoking thing isn't likely to be a one off, as most irregular smokers don't chain smoke.

With the alcohol, yes it can damage the baby, although it's actually riskier in early than late pregnancy.

Heavy drinking in later pregnancy can cause NAS (Neonatal Absintance syndrome) where the baby goes through withdrawal after birth, although there are ways this can be managed.

The problem is what do you do? Social services can and do get involved in cases such as the above, but if you want to really reduce a kid's chance of getting a good life, involving social services is a pretty good way to do it...

That's a bit harsh?

At the end of the day, we can continue impeaching on people's human rights, or just let them do what they want and let them have that responsibility, like everyone does. Sure, it's very irresponsible considering the possible health effects for her and the baby, but that's her decision to make. It's like people with young kids who smoke around them. You see plenty of that about, and I've never felt inclined to inform them of the health risks to them and their children (as I'd probably get a clout since it's not my place!).

In short, the world is chock full of stupid, selfish people, and it's something you have to just deal with.

Well, we could possibly be dealing with somebody who turns out to be a really irresponsible parent. So getting social services involved would be the lesser of two evils

I don't think it is her decision to make though, not really, I mean yes she can drink and smoke all she wants but the child doesn't have a say in the matter so somebody has to stand up for it, just like the abortion laws there should be laws in place to protect an unborn child from these things.

agreed

I used to smoke around my kids and then one day got a conscience and now only smoke outside or in my man room :)

As cruel as this sounds I agree.

dont forget you are wishing the person we are concerned about dead...

my other half said she must be 8 months gone...

the woman was a right nasty looking bird as well, and she had a right go at the bar man for getting confused about something.

One of the reasons that women intentionally smoke when pregnant is that it can often reduce in a smaller birth weight.

Again, not always. It has to be a truly terrible home environment to make local authority care an option with a better likely outcome (Which isn't to say that no good comes from LA care, just that the likelihood of it is not good).

Unfortunately, as a society we handed over responsibility to the government and expect them to sort everything, and in most cases they can't, and indeed they are often making things worse...
