Whats Leicester like? New job opportunity ..

Theres actually a monster size premier inn opened in an old office tower block right by the marker on your map. You cant miss it, its about 20 storeys high and painted blue. I think they have a car park as well so you could just park your ride there and walk to work in 2 mins every day for that first part.

I live in Sapcote and would say that this village or Hinckley / Croft / Huncote would be your best bet for accommodation.

If you was to go for Sapcote or Hinckley the motorway is literally next door to us, it would take like 5 mins to get onto it then about 15 minutes to Fosse Park which have recently built a 'park and ride' so if you worry about parking you could just use that and get a weekly travel pass or if you don't like busses then it would take about 20 mins to town.

and the same thing for Croft / Huncote (Huncotes a bit closer) are good because its practically the same travel time to the park and ride :p

Braunstone isn't rough as people say they talk pap, There is like 1 pub there where all the 'hardnuts' hang out.

And yes there is a lot of polaks and asians, so I wouldnt rent down Melton Road / Narborough Road unless you want to feel like your in India

Oh and Hinckley has its own town to, so you wouldn't need to go into Leicester for food shopping etc, you'd only have to venture out to go Cinema which belive it or not is 15 mins down the motorway :p

For where you are working (behind the train station) it will cut your commute a lot if you can minimize time spent on the inner ring road so imo go for SE Leicester(shire).

If you want a flat short term there will be plenty £500-£800pm depending on size, parking etc. on/near London Road in the Stoneygate/Clarendon Park area. No more than 10mins walk from some shops and if you are willing to filter, then the commute will be I would guess less than ten mins each morning on a motorbike.

Bit further out is Oadby, plenty of big houses out there. Still commute down London Road, add another 5-10 mins to travel time. Parts of this are a proper rich area (Try Google streetview on Knighton Grange Road)

If you want a real village as some have mentioned there are plenty in Market Harborough direction. Again add another 10 or so mins in the morning.

As above.

You're working right next to the train station, so the quickest would be to either live in the city centre, Stoneygate or Claredon Park which is very nice and literally 10mins away. Or a bus ride down one road, if you want to take the bus :o :p -

Oadby is beatiful however I don't really think there is much of a rental market here.

There's nowhere to really park at reasonable rates around where you're working. It's either Pay and Display which wouldn't really be suitable. The closest multi-storey is on Halford St which around a 5minute walk. Your work may pay for it, though? If you're really lucky, Premier Inn may have an car park but I don't think they do.

Why is Leicester full of asians standing on corners holding advertising boards for Dominos ? is that what passes for a job these days ? :p

I don't think they do (if it's that horrible blue building you're thinking of), the car park immediately behind it is the train station's I think.

Yeah, okay, you don't like leicester. We get it.

He's kinda right, there's one dude opposite the train station, a couple on Granby Street, one outside the bus station, etc.... all they do is stand there. It's not bad for a minimum wage I guess. Just stand there with a bit of cardboard :D It's quite perplexing at the same time, because there's only one Domino's in Leicester that I know of, and it's an incredibly tiny little place on a street corner just outside of the center. There's far larger pizzerias all over the place.

Are they still about? I know they were literally EVERYWHERE for about a week in May when that Dominos on London Rd had a refurb and were doing Pizza deals. I haven't seen them since.

I was referring more to the constant posting and berating of the city in both this and another city related thread. Those kind of people are in lots of cities. Loughborough has them for mcdonalds. Birmingham has them for subway. I've seen them aaaaaallllllll over london.

Good to see such a turnout from the leicester ocuk contingent :p

It's been a while but I used to drink in the loaf reasonably often, as well as the nine bar/looking glass... well, just about every bar on braunstone gate/narb rd/hinkley rd.
City centre drinking was just too much grief with many of the bars being a bit 'towny'. Still go to the Globe occasionally, but my favourite watering hole was demolished recently - The Pump & Tap (plus the bowstring bridge). Sad sad day. Poxy council/de montfort poly :(

Leicester is a horrible place, however you will find nice area outside of the city

A lot of ares are very run down with an extremely high immigrant population

Traffic generally is not that bad

Is it like Leeds or Winchester ? er no chance , seriously the nearest equivalemts would be Bradford and Luton ( not just for the obvious reasons )

seconded

avoid like the plague - braunstone, new parks, woodgate, highfields, melton road, rushy meads (you'll be the only white person within a 5 mile radius)

We might have met  I work there.

Depends how long you've been there. Was only semi-joking above - Tbh I actually haven't been to the loaf since late April, other than a quick visit the other night.

Used to go all the time, but I got a bit sick of it, so lately I've been sticking to the other places. But yeah, if youve worked there for more than three months or so we'd probably recognise each other. :D

*edit* I was reading more about Leicester and found this. Holy mother of god they sound like absolute retards:

Thanks!!! :p

I am from Leicester, lived here for around 9 years.
I would be looking at the Wigston, Aylestone, Birstall and Oadby area's, if you want close to city centre, or a little bit more travelling, Loughborough, Rothly, Shepshed area's or if you can cope with a fair bit more travelling then look at Uppingham, Oakham etc. (in Rutland, where I used to live), or towards Market Harborough.

avoid like the plague - braunstone, new parks, woodgate, highfields, melton road, rushy meads (you'll be the only white person within a 5 mile radius)
Also add Beaumont Leys, Belgrave & Evington to this list :) .... all of them are in the city itself though. Glad to see where I live isn't listed so far though!! :D

Pump & Tap was awesome :(, are you an Urbexer btw?
Globe is good, nice pint of Original to end the night :D. In town I usually end up drinking in The Goose, as it is cheap and without the Chavs :D

Another Leicester lad here. In my opinion it isn't the nicest of places but I've seen worse. Nice but expensive houses can be had around South Knighton.

For some life I recommend Clarendon Park - not as run down as the west end and has a nice park (Victoria Park). Knighton also has a park (Knighton Park - its one of the best in Leicester imo).

lol I had to google that... er, so no, I'm not

The demolishing of the bridge was naff. When I first lived here, you could walk down the great central way, over the bridge and down the steps at the back of the P&T. Since (I don't know how long) the bridge was closed, with pathetic excuses about it costing too much to maintain, it's unsafe etc, I recon the plan to redevelop that area was already given the go ahead, so they closed the bridge and let it rot... choosing instead to go with the cheapest option. You couldn't have demolished it if lots of people still had access to it - but having said that, it didn't save the pub either.

Real shame.

Might get offered job in Leicester. Never been anywhere near, but I can't turn this work down.

Just a couple of questions please from anyone that knows ...?

1) Are there kind of quaint villages a little out of the city where I can get into the city in maybe 30 minutes on my motorbike for the work, but enjoy country life away from it all during the evenings? Village pub - nice views - you know the gig! Kind of the best of both worlds .. Anywhere within 30 mins ride? (And this bears in mind the traffic .. how bad is it? At the moment I'm in London and average about 10mph travelling so surely it's better .. er .. maybe?_

2) Is it a poor/quite depressed area. Like -- er -- about 95% of Scotland for example? (Thats an entire demograph insulted there! sorry!) - or is it actually quite nice as it does it have high employment and quite nice jobs, or high UNemployment and lots of ****** scratching around to try and get by?

3) Has it got a Brummie / harsh accent?

4) Is there any area which I should avoid like the plague when choosing to rent a house (bearing in mind its going to be a 400 mile round trip to view the house .. I don't want to find myself in Beirut when the advert promised Surbiton!)

5) Is there anything else I should worry about or is wierd compared to other cities, or is it just the same fundermentally as if I'd said 'what's leeds like' or 'whats winchester like'?

I appreciate this.

Britters.

I don't want a link to the wiki about the place as I've already read it.
