Hyundai Warranty issues - any advice? What are my rights?

The problem is a very high proportion of monitor manufacturers use repairtech.

Indeed, and it may well be a reason I stump up a bit more for a Dell or Sony or some other premium brand in the future.

I honestly thought companies had realised that they couldn't get away with things like a warranty repair taking 2 months. i see now its simply because all the warranty work I have dealt with in the past 4 or 5 years has been either with Dell or Logitech.

I love the Hyundai monitor, it really is a great display, I am missing it massively using this old Dell, but, 2 months!?!

Suprise suprise, my W40D Monitor (manufactured Aug 2007) has exactly the same fault as those above. Over the last few weeks it needed to be turned on/off/on/off/on/off to get the blue light active.
Eventually, no amount of turning on/off would get it started.
So its off for repair as well... I'll post again when its finally fixed.. and will try to get an answer as to what really IS the generic fault that makes them pack up after around 2.5 years.... wish me luck...

I had a lot of problems with repairtech but eventually I rang up Hyundai in Germany and sorted out a replacement. got a 241D instead of my old 240D. I didn't have the same problems though but a jumpy screen.

My Q17's only had a 1 year warranty from hyundai so when the inverter popped I wasn't best pleased... then 2 weeks later a power surge took out my second monitor's inverter. A quick email off to hyundai germany and I was sent 2 inverters and 2 replacement power boards for £25 shipped from germany. Turnaround time from the first email to receiving the items was less than a week.

I have nothing but praise for hyundai and I am typing this on a 2003 october built hyundai q17. 3rd party repair companies always seem to suck *cough infoteam for acer*

im going through nightmare with repairtech aswell
my W240D monitor broke in april and they waiting for part since then (over 3 months right now!!),
i asked them for refund or replacement because it takes too long and they told me that i should speak with shop (wtf!) where i bought my monitor (monitor is 2 and a half years old...) well nevermind i rang ******** (shop where i got it) they told me that they gonna look into it and call me back next day...
well "next day" was 2 days ago....
so im thinking now about trying to call germany

@Tombo: how did you manage to sort out replacement? who did you call in germany and who did you speak with?

I will keep you updated whats going on

Just got a call from them this morning saying that they apologised for the amount of time it took Hyundai to supply the replacement panel and that it was now in and could they arrange delivery back to me tomorrow morning.

So, it should be back tomorrow via DPD. We shall see if I get lucky and its a good repair job :) The panel it left with (aside from being totally dead ;)) had no dead pixels at all, wonder if I'll get so lucky again... the casing was also in pristine condition, again, wonder if it will still be... we shall see!

Well, delivered back this morning in the original packaging I sent it out in (albeit a bit more battered now, but that's to be expected).

I'm pleased to say, it all seems to be working perfectly again, can't find a dead pixel on the panel this time either and the casing is in more or less the same condition I sent it out in.

So so glad to be looking at it again instead of that old Dell :) Just a real shame it took them so long to do the work.

EDIT: Update: The damn thing just broke again :( Exactly the same fault, turn it on, nothing comes up on the screen and the power LED turns blue (and the buttons make a beep if you press them), tried from my PC with DVI and from my laptop with D-Sub, switching input sources does as you would expect, i.e. on two of them the light goes red as there is no input (HDMI and Composite) and on two it goes blue (DVI and D-Sub). Bt in all cases, the screen remains utterly black, doesn't look to me like the panel even powers on.

Im wondering if its the inverter and they have re-used the old one... would be very bad form imho if they have given the nature of the error.

Anyway, back into its box it goes and another day at home on Monday for it to be picked up to go back to them...

I'm a fairly patient man but I am close to boiling point now :)

Edit 2: ARGHHH it's working again now!! Connected my laptop up one last time and the screen half flickered to life, then went out again. Put it across to DVI and on it came. Haven't managed to make it do it again. Not sure what to do now!

Edit 3 (:D): Well it did it again and this time I couldn't get it to come back on, so I took a picture of it with the LED on but screen off and arranged for it to be picked up on Monday... SIGH!

I will give you update as promised:
after two weeks fighting with retailer (they promised me 3 times to call back and that never happend) they offered me 120 £ if i want refund.....
what a joke.... monitor cost two years ago little below 400...
so next step hyundai germany....

Oh sorry I didn't check this thread again, in the end even the replacement had a fault so I ended up with £200 back from the retailer.

I'm absolutely amazed to be reading these problems! It's a shame that in 2010 a company can get away with such things.

My mouth was literally dropping open at some point in this thread! Good luck to all those effected, and very good luck to manic man! :D

I shall keep this thread in mind when shopping for a new monitor in the coming months! (current on a 19" Acer we got with an Acer media centre...)

Well supposedly it has now been diagnosed as needing a new system board.

It all strikes me as somebody just taking a guess and replacing things one by one.

Luckily, there isn't too much else in there other than the panel and the logic board., so fingers crossed...

As they once again need to order the part, I am expecting about the same lead time. So by the time I get it back it will have been roughly 4 months to be repaired.

I fully intend to speak with a supervisor before it is delivered back this time. I want promises from them it has been properly tested before it gets sent back as the fault clearly only manifests after it being on for a little while.

If I get it back and it does it again I think I'll be somewhere close to legal action.

im waiting for board and matrix change over 3 and a half month now.... so 4 months is quite optimistic time scale i think, and when you ask to speak with manager she is always out of office and they propose you to complain in writing by normal mail...

manic_man I hope they do what they say they will do with your monitor, they told me they were replacing the board of mine and then in the end someone decided it was just a small thing that needed soldering....it came back with the same problem as before.

Hi
Oh dear I just came across this thread I have a w240 2+1/2 years old bought from Overclockers .Mine started to pack up after 6 months ! The image I got was like an old cine film burning and very bad screen flicker. This happened again some months later went back to repairtech ( who actually were very good ! ).About a year ago the screen started going black and the blue led stayed red but only on the dvi port .Have been using it on the hdmi & vga port ever since works fine ,now it flickers on these :(
Have tried the monitor on 5 pc's now ( with the same dvi lead )and strangly it worked on 2 but the display on these was like zoomed in and I had to scroll around the screen.

Will NEVER buy Hyundai again I tried emailing their warranty & cust support both times the email was undeliverable .

Did get a reply from Hyundai US though, oops :) & Repairtech will wait and see.
(times runnin out)

Thats wierd i have a Benq 24" monitor and they use Repairtech, the power button caved in and i couldnt turn monitor on or off which is a common fault according to Benq, they passed my details onto Repairtech.

Few days later i get a phonecall asking me to box my monitor up and that they were coming to collect it, when the courier arrived a few days later he already had my replacement monitor and it was just a swap at the door, in the end i got the next model up from my old crappy monitor.

Dont know why you are having problems.

My guess would be that Benq pay a whole lot more than Hyundai for their Repairtech service contract :)

It's quite evident that Hyundai consider their foray into the monitor market a failure, just look t their current model line-up on their website, the W240D line still has front page coverage, that's a model that is over 3 years old now, and no replacement.

As an update.. there has been no update, haven't heard back from repairtech.

Well, just because i'd like to keep this thread alive to document just how bad this warranty repair service is, thought i'd post an update.

Given It had been 3 weeks since they picked it up for the SECOND time due to the first near on 8 week repair not fixing the problem, I gave them a call.

As usual, very polite phone staff. Anyway, the guy sounded a bit surprised at my tale, though perhaps they have been told to feign this to make it appear as though it isn't common (others in this thread seem to say otherwise). So he looked up the details to see what the hold up was, but decided there was a problem and he would have to find out what it is was and get back to me. This was promised on Thursday last week. So this morning I phoned up again.

Again, very polite member of staff, but she could only tell me that the part was on order, they had "chased up with the supplier" and that she had put a note in my account so that someone would give me a call to tell me the moment the part was logged as arrived.
There was no estimated lead-time.

This strikes me as though Hyundai have effectively stopped making monitors but still have 3 year warranties to honour. So they are paying companies like repairtech the very minimum to offer the service in each country. So repairtech et al. don't keep any stock of spare parts, and certainly no replacement units, they don't offer direct swap-out and they probably have to order every single part direct from the manufacturing companies in Taiwan, China etc. Hence the lead-time.

I am going to give them one more week, then do as others have in this thread, contact Hyundai Germany. I firmly don't believe that repairtech are solely to blame here, but I think they perhaps need to reconsider taking on contracts such as this as it tarnishes their name for all the other, better paying, companies they offer a warranty service for.

Alternatively of course, they could just be totally rubbish...

*ding* 4 months of waiting for part for me today
as usual i called them and as usual the apologized and as usual they told me they will inform manager about situation and as usual nothing else happend...

Well, just got my monitor back this morning (8th September), so assuming it doesn't break again in then next few hours, that has taken just under 3 months in total, if you don't count the hour I had it back a month or so ago.

Impressions so far: Definitely the same chassis, bezel around the screen is now covered in fine scratches so clearly it has been rested on a hard surface, also the mounting point between the screen and the stand is no longer flush, though it seems solid, so hasn't been put back together carefully.

However, the screen itself definitely has a new "logic board" as the menu shows software version 3.85 (was 3.65 before iirc) and I now have the option to turn "RTC" on and off (its off by default), this was the overdrive function built-in to try and reduce the effects of the 6ms motion blur, but all it really did was add an odd "pre motion" shadow, I'm very glad its now off, the difference is very noticeable.

So it now has: a totally new screen and inverter assembly and a totally new "logic board", a few more scratches than it had and a slightly wonky mounting (doesn't effect the monitor in usage).

So now all I have to hope is that in a few hours it doesn't rinse and repeat...

Fingers crossed :)

EDIT: Just to say, I noticed that the "neck" of the stand was at a funny angle compared to the base while walking towards the monitor. I thought initially it was due to the joint at the top, which is indeed slightly distorted compared to when I sent it off, but this was far more fundamental, it was clearly not anchored properly to the base.

Sure enough, I flipped it over and found that 3 screws looked the same but one was totally different. 1 screw fitted fine and still had its compression washer. The other two had no washer and were so stripped I pulled them out with my fingers, the third kind of fitted, but had no washer and pulled out once unscrewed by about 50%.

There was 100% no reason for this base to EVER be removed, it comes off with the neck from the back of the monitor body by simply undoing 4 large black screws. So not only have they taken it apart unnecessarily, they have clearly lost the original screws and washers.

I'm glad I spotted this as those two screws would have simply fallen out at some point and who knows what would have snapped/bent.

I have bought 4 new screws and compression washers myself and will put it back together myself, not trusting these monkeys again.

I will definitely be compiling my experience and sending it to Hyundai HQ, and I would just like to re-iterate (if it were needed) once again, DO NOT BUY HYUNDAI MONITORS IF YOU LIVE IN THE UK as the warranty service is truly abysmal.

Good luck to everyone else who hasn't had theirs back yet.
