Hi just wondering if I was to build a cheap quadcore pc for a m8 on a budget could I get one of those cheap towers + p/s units the cheapo generic 450watters with 24pin/4pin and like 4 molexs/1 sata ?

Seen them for £25ish quid as a bundle hes Not gaming but will be used for 8-12hrs per day.... basics specs would be a quadcore intel cpu/4gig/1tb/dvdwriter no graphics card

Those bundled PSUs will be incredibly cheap units, as you'd expect to pay £40+ for a true 450watt PSU.

The cheap supplies tend to combine all their voltage rails together to come up with the total peak wattage. You may find that the PSU has a poor 12v rail with insufficient or unstable power provision, and considering that pretty much everything draws 12v these days may leave you with issues.

If you are going to spend good money on a quad CPU, mobo, ram why would you want to potentially destroy it with a bad PSU.

Risk it if you want but if it blows it'll probably destroy everything you put inside the case.

Better go for Corsair, Antec, OCZ, Be quiet etc branded supply and a dirt cheap Case.

No. How many times do people need to be told? Never, ever, skimp on the psu. It's the most important component in a pc and cheap ones can never deliver their stated output, have weak unstable rails and when they fail are likley to take the rest of the rig with them.

They are cheap for a reason. The reason being they are crap!!

A Corsair CX400 would be enough for that rig and it's cheap so there is no reason to compromise.

It's not worth risking to be honest. If it fails, it'll more than likely destroy the mobo too. If you were putting together a very low spec and just for browsing internet, no storage then fair enough, but a quad core, ain't worth. +1 for the corsair above, very good brand.

while I will always recommend quality psus that system will be drawing 200 watts or less so I would dare say you will be fine if you take the chance. But personally I would buy a quality unit

I built a cheapo rig for a friend once who told me in no uncertain terms that he was 100% sure that he would not play games. I picked a cheaper mobo with no AGP slot (was a while back) and put it together for him.

Not more than 2 weeks later he asked me why his computer wouldn't play any of the games he bought.

Never say never.

To be honest the best argument for a branded PSU particularly if he like to watch his pennies is their efficiency. If the computer is going to be on for so many hours a day, I don't even have to get my calculator out to confidently say that the PSU will pay itself off over its lifespan more than once.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, go for a decent quality unit, they can be had for as little as £10-15 more and will save you soo much hassle and worry in the future.

Everyone is going to tell you this, but a PSU is the most important part of a PC. If it does not regulate power properly, every single component in your computer could be fried beyond any use. Is the extra £20 not worth the whole system?
