Whats Leicester like? New job opportunity ..

Shocked that they took the Pump and Tap down, was in there a couple of nights before it went.

Sad.

They've not done anything with the land yet either.

Leicester is okay once you get used to it.

A lot of people here are citing the abundance of Asians and multiple cultures as a negative. So if you dont like Indians then dont come to Leicester.

Leicester is a horrible place, however you will find nice area outside of the city

A lot of ares are very run down with an extremely high immigrant population.

I did four years of university there and I can confirm that it is exactly as Rotty says.

Some of the villages outside of Leicester are nice and within easy commute but the houses will be priced accordingly.

its not so much the abudance of immigrants, its the way they form their own little communities - a ghetto almost that people of a british ethnic background just wont be welcomed in. And this applies to the eastern european immigrants as much as the asian ones.

Victoria park isnt what somebody from outside would class as a nice area. Its just as not as bad as the rest.

Even wigston has been mentioned as a nice play to live - and it just wasn't. We were continually blocked in by inconsiderate neighbours (no off street parking) who would leave their cars blocking others in, then intentionally ignore knocks and at the door and people leaning on their horns.

You've got a horrendous problem with youths hanging around south wigston park on a night drinking alcohol underage and causing trouble, which the new tesco seems to have contributed towards. The council is terrible, when we left 4 years ago we didnt even have wheelie bins for christs sake. And their idea of recycling was to provide you with green bin liners as opposed to the normal black ones.

Then there was anti social youths hanging around all the time, who continually vandalised south wigston high school and the day nursery in its grounds.

Wigston centre wasnt much better either, with the local mcdonalds filled with idiotic boy racers every night speeding up and down wigston highstreet.

Thanks!!! :p

I am from Leicester, lived here for around 9 years.
I would be looking at the Wigston, Aylestone, Birstall and Oadby area's, if you want close to city centre, or a little bit more travelling, Loughborough, Rothly, Shepshed area's or if you can cope with a fair bit more travelling then look at Uppingham, Oakham etc. (in Rutland, where I used to live), or towards Market Harborough.

Also add Beaumont Leys, Belgrave & Evington to this list :) .... all of them are in the city itself though. Glad to see where I live isn't listed so far though!! :D

good point on beaumont fleas ( i mean leys), and belgrave / elvington. Forgot to mention these.

Oakham / Uppingham / Rothly / Oadby etc.. are all very niced but are priced accordingly. nice 3 bed semis going for 200 to 300k for example.

And as for wigston, i used to live in south wigston and it was a horrible place to live (also lived for a while in the city centre around Frog Island) See my thoughts above !

Frog Island

no way - I used to work on frog island, near the canal and just opposite the factory thing that got torched as an insurance job - it's now one of those handy car wash places that seem to be everywhere now - it doesn't sound good when I mention that, does it? lol

yeah the old factory was burnt down a while back after standing derelict for years.

Its now an immigrant car wash.

This is just round the corner of course from the Friar Tuck that was shut down after its landlord shot 2 people. And this is just along from the portugese restaurant where somebody was stabbed outside. Classy area :D

I've got a story for you all.....

I was walking down the road on Sunday morning 4am after a really really heavy night on the beer. 3 chavs come racing past on there bikes and one of them snatches my iphone out my hand then shouts something like. " I've just took your iphone " while blasting down the road at 100mph.

This was in BRAUNSTONE.

Today I finally found out who took my phone and I hear it's been sold on already!!!!

What to do next?

Already posted but I'll repost:

That's a bit of sweeping comment. Evington is pretty big - it has substantial houses and very nice areas with houses hitting £1m. However on the other side the areas a bit run down and has factories etc. So to distinguish, Evington is split into three. There's North Evington and Evington Valley which I recommend you stay away from. While there not dangerous or known for crime, they are pretty run down and mainly have people newly come from other countries residing.

The rest of Evington (Evington Village etc) is absolutely fine. As said above there's some very nice parts - Spencefield lane and surrounding areas, Evington Lane, Linden Drive etc.

And as for wigston, i used to live in south wigston and it was a horrible place to live (also lived for a while in the city centre around Frog Island) See my thoughts above

Yeah Wigston isn't great, although some if it is quite nice. It's ruined by chavy teens. The same with Knighton, which has some of nicest houses around but again, pick up the Leicester Mercury and there's always stories about youths beating up people and causing trouble in Knighton park.

seconded

avoid like the plague - braunstone, new parks, woodgate, highfields, melton road, rushy meads (you'll be the only white person within a 5 mile radius)

Braunstone, New Parks, Beamont Lees are majority white. Highfields and Melton Rd has loads of brown people, with the former having a lot of forigeners. Melton Rd isn't actually dangerous, though. Just not somewhere you'd want to live.

all this is just next door to 'diamonds' gentleman's club  it looks well seedy from the outside.
Still, a lot of frog island is earmarked for redevelopment.
All around the city, especially where you follow the canal through and past abbey park, they are demolishing no end of derelict factory buildings. Can't think there's going to be anything built on any of it when it's done... everyone will have run out of money, if they haven't already.

As far as where I live, most of the immigrant population is eastern european - thuggish looking skinhead blokes, skinny women (child and pushchair optional), quite often towing a suitcase on wheels behind them. lol only last week in my corner shop, the only bread they had left on the shelves was polish sour dough bread

But as much as I'll complain about living here, I'd rather live here than birmingham... or coventry  :D

That's a bit of sweeping comment. .

granted

but when giving advice to somebody who'se never been there before you need to keep it brief. We could be here all day discussing which parts are ok and what arent.

He can always get a feel for that himself once he's lived there a while. (that is, if he decides to stay)

So the OP. Avoid these areaas:

Braunstone, New parks, Woodgate (also called Frog Island), highfields, melton road, rushy meads, Wigston, Beaumont Leys, Evington (North Evington and Evington Valley) Belgrave & Knighton

All for differing reasons, Some have no immigrant communities but are just really run down and not a nice place to live. Others are beset with anti social behavious problems from local youths, others (ie Rushy Meads) you will be the only white person on the estate and feel majorly out of place.

Thats quite a lot of places so leicester isnt the nicest of places. As already said, best outside of leicester completely and commute in - but house prices will reflect this. Nice areas 3 bed semis will go for 200 - 300k.

I lived in leicester for a few years as thats where my wife was from and initially we moved in together there so she was close to home etc.. However i i was brought up in Leeds which is a great place to live. Took her back to stay with my parents for long weekends etc.. She really liked the place so we moved back up north about 3/4 years ago now and havent looked back since.

Leicester is definitely nicer than nottingham. I've lived in leicestershire my entire life and frequent both cities regularly and i live in neither so i'd say i'm fairly unbiased.

Lets put it this way, in certain areas of leicester i'm wary of going around on my own at night. In nottingham, i'm pretty on edge the whole time. I once saw a guy get mugged at knife point in the centre of nottingham, that wasn't nice at all. I've never even seen a knife in leicester.

Barkby is a sleepy little village, Birstall is quiet too. Quorn like mentioned is rather nice and if you want a really picturesque village then woodhouse eaves and swithland are the places to be in my opinion.

Birstall has a fair few new houses/flats being built up towards the A46, although they do look rather nice so not sure how much they'd be going for.

Where is this "elvington" place that you have refered to three times? Could it be that you are blagging?

sorry i keep typing it with a L for some reason.

After having lived In both Woodgate and South Wigston i have no need to blag. Would you perhaps like to know what was on the site of the current tesco in south wigston before they demoilished it to make way for the tesco ? or perhaps that the patch of ground outside the young offenders institute in south wigston is still owned by the army and used for the cadets to do training on, the patch next to the DSA test centre and in front of the homeless hostel ? Or perhaps how bad the pork pie roundabout was before they redeveloped it and put traffic lights on it ?
