My 4870x2 just doesnt like to be overclocked.

I have put the core clock to 780 from 750, and the memory clock to 950 from 900. I am using MSI Afterburner. I have not tried to increase Voltage. My card is the asus 4970x2 tri-fan. Card gets very hot with this Overclock though.

Try to OC with ATI Tray Tools.

Take off the OC limiter and keep an eye on temps. Might help.

I actually use it for the inverse, to underclock my 4870 since it idle's at 80oC. Core at 200 and memory at 500... oh yeah baby it's like liquid ice. At 64oC.

I can't imagine being able to OC my 4870 unless I replaced the heatsinks with something rather hefty.

Mine doesn't oc either.. Just gets too hot! In cold weather i can get 100mhz out of it, but no chance in summer!

MSI afterburner is good enough to OC.

My card should be fine for the heat i have the fri-fan edition.

Yup, hot running cards so will need a voltage adjustment most likely. In this weather in particular I like to also have my clocks running much lower.

Can anyone tell me why the 4870X2 graphics card have such poor overclocking? i have heard the single 4870 overclocks ok. When i had a 4890 that oced quite well. I assume that the 5970s are decent overclockers as i would like to maybe invest in one in the near future.

I used to have two 4870x2 in crossfire

Under water i was able to get 850mhz out of each core easy....

The 5970 i get 1000mhz out of each core easy...

your card must be a bad batch

Would updating the bios to the asus top do the trick? Also did you tweak the voltage as i havent touched it yet. I have read about that people have had trouble overclocking them.

You probably will need to change the voltage, haven't tried it myself. Hopefully somone that has will pop along. Sure some that have done this to their 4870's have been on here. Have a 'search'. Btw - if you can't overclock on air I wouldn't worry, that's quite common for the 4870's / X2's. Iirc that's why the 4890's o/c better - due to different voltage settings out of the box. Be careful though if you try!

When I installed a Accelero on my old 4870x2 I could not clock it any higher than 780 Core 950 Mem without the machine locking up. Installing the Asus Top BIOS helped and I was able to take it to 835 Core 1Ghz Mem before things went south.

4870/4870 x2's just don't like over clocking full stop, thanks to the over current protection that will cause black screens at random intervals (getting more and more frequent as you increase the clocks).

Kind of irritating because otherwise they would clock quite well

Well i have read the asus top bios allows you to OC a fair bit. I would be happy taking my card from 750 to around 830 850 stable. Do i use a USB memory stick to flash in dos mode?

Yea, I used a USB stick to boot to old school DR DOS and did the flashing from there.

Does anyone know if MSI afterburner voltage adjustments work for the 4870x2 properly? i can adjust it all the way up to 1.35. I am not sure if the tweaks are correctly registering. Is 1.35 safe?
