Iv seen a Beema I like, as I only have a budget of £4.5k-£5k its really finding something for this price range.

My current car (Golf MK4 GT TDi) was not in as good as condition as this BMW when I bought it although it was in good nik, and I bought it with 105k on the clock, Iv had it over 3 years and its now got 156k on the clock.

This as you can see has about 90k on the clock.

What are peoples thoughts?

Iv always fancied one, plus apart from the golf, nothing else is interesting me at the moment :(

That could change, who knows.

I think so, given that I will probably be spending around the same money on a petrol car, and given that diesel (55+mpg combined in this) will certainly beat a 35mpg petrol car, I would be saving money by going with a diesel.

I want something thats bigger, better built, comfy, more BHP than my golf, same sort of fuel economy as my golf, looks good, has all the gadgets, has plenty of space.

It's an SE, so expect to be slated by Fox

The following phrases will also be included:

4pot, poxy, go for the 6 pot, emission figures of the 330i

:p

I don't think there's any reason to slate SE if one of the qualities wanted is a comfy ride quality...

For the 1 series especially, I actually prefer the look of the SE, the M Sport rear bumper especially puts me off.

Plus as you said, I like having the comfy ride :)

It does seem a bit pricey to me, especially given the very low spec. The only optional extra I can see is the Harmon Kardon. I'm looking around for an e46 touring for the outlaws at the moment and for that sort of budget I'm expecting to get a newer sport version.

Looks a bit over priced to me...nearly 90k on the clock and well over £4k. Though I am not clued up on my BMWs - surely there must be a better deal out there?

He already has a diesel?

He already has a golf, so why not get another golf? ;)

Equivalent petrol is generally a cheaper car to buy (read: diesels tend to hold their value better due to percieved cheaper running costs) and there is less to go wrong with the petrol potentially. Worth comparing running costs of things aside from fuel, especially looking at BMW etc where servicing and maintenence will be more than your current car.

What sort of driving do you do? City or long runs? What sort of economy do you get from your current Golf?

I think the car linked seems about slightly above average price-wise, pre-facelift SE, very few options and just sub 100k mileage. Appears to look ok from pictures though. Were you after an SE specifically?

I generally do a mixture of Urban and M'way which work out to be equal I guess. I generally get around average 50-60mpg from my golf.

If people are suggesting I could pick up a decent condition facelift model for the same price, then I will most certainly look out for one of these. Thats if I go for the BMW, I still might get another golf (150bhp MK4)

That car is a facelift not a pre-facelift, 2001 was the year they changed them.

Have you got ANY idea how frustrated I am getting about people like you guessing what I think? I wouldnt mind but somebody else will read what you've wrote, assume its gospel truth and suddenly I've got yet another reputation for whatever it is you think I think.

In reality I am usually found advising people buying cheaper BMW's to chose an SE over a Sport because although I beleive the Sport to be a better car I beleive the SE to be a far better used buy at this sort of pricepoint. I am utterly consistent on this point so I really cannot understand why you feel the need to second guess me. You cannot get GET a 2001 320d Sport anyway.

As for this case I would be wary of getting ANY BMW diesel at this end of the market. Out of warranty I beleive these cars to be too much of a risk to make any sense purchasing. I completely get that some people would rather pay to fix a broken great car than have a reliable dull car - thats what I do at the moment - but the diesel is there to save money on fuel and its completely counter productive to buy a car which will almost certainly cancel out any savings in fuel through mechanical failure.

The vast majority of 320d's are suffering from the ridiculously stupid swirl flap design flaw which is writing the engines off when the plastic flap breaks down and is sucked into the engine. The repair bill is thousands of pounds. You can replace the swirl flaps with blanking plates which remove the risk but this work in itself will cost £300ish at a decent indy (And a non decent indy wont even know why you are doing it anyway).

If you must have a 150bhpish BMW SE, find a 318i SE instead with the 2.0 16v Valvetronic engine. No it wont deliver Japanese levels of reliability but neither is it likely to lunch its entire engine.

Thanks for the advice Fox, I will be exploring all possibilities at this point, I still have a few months to make up my mind.
