My pc specs are:

QX9650 @ 3ghz

4gigs of ddr2 800mhz Ram

If I added a new gpu of the caliber of a 5870 or stronger, will I be bottlenecking the gpu much if at all?

No if got games that are optimise for Quad.

Yes if for games that's single or dual-threaded (only optimised to use 1 or 2 cores), but not hugely. Ideally you should get a decent CPU cooler and try to overclock your QX9650 to as close to 4GHz as possible to boost performance and frame rate in games.

But if you are asking if you should be worried about getting a 5870 with that CPU, then the answer is no.

You will prob find as my mate did that your Ram will let you down on some games BFBC etc. Not the speed somuch the the ammount,he went and got another 2 gig and was ok.

Edit: Forget that !!!! Thought you said you had 2GIG ram not 4 ...... It will be fine mate. All he did was up his CPU to 3.5.It was ok @stock but just to get a few more FPS

That CPU will overclock very easily to 3.6GHz and beyond. Depending on the resolution and game you're playing, it could give the FPS a significant boost; more so where the game only supports 1 or 2 cores.

Indeed, as you have an "extreme edition" CPU, you could just change the multiplier, the more conventional way is to alter the bus speed, which in turn changes your FSB speed.

If you are unsure about how to overclock, go look up some guides in the CPU section of the forum. Core 2 CPUs are pretty straightforward ;)

How to easily overlclock my cpu?

Just up mulitplier by one?

have a look here http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx...del=Striker+II+Formula&page=1&SLanguage=en-us

I have a QX9650 clocked at 3.92 on air with 37,37,23,30 idle temps. Search around:) Shouldn't be too hard to do. try and keep volts around 1.3 ish.

I've found out that my CPU is "genarally" fine, and the bottleneck for my ATI 5970 isn't the cpu i don't think, but the RAM (ddr2/tracer balistics), and my Motherboard (Striker II Nvidia Chip).

Just on this Nvidia note - i'm woindering if a Nvidia GTX 480 would work better for me on my MOBO than an ATI 5970...
