Hi all,

Got a bit of a cheeky request! I am doing a group project as part of my computing degree and have created a short(ish) questionnaire to collect some data for our report.

Our report is on the effects of Social Networks on Education and Young People, so if you could take a few minutes to do the questionnaire I and my group would really appreciate it!

There are 10 questions and an answer is required for all of them. Please only take part in this questionnaire if you are in or work in education!

Many thanks!

You've put YouTube in the same category as Facebook, etc..

I think youtube is extremely beneficial in education, and I don't think you can class it as a social networking site.

All the actual social networking sites, facebook etc, are completely useless in education though.

Done, for the record Youtube is incredibly useful, however i don't rate it as a social networking site so have answered the questions with that in mind.

Social networking is the bane of our schools existence, nearly all fights this year either started because of facebook or the aftermath spilled onto there (often with mobile phone videos of the fights being posted).

We have all the social network sites banned at my school. They've been a nuisance in all honesty, bringing in a lot of outside issues into a school.

However, I'm of the mindset that we need to move with the times and use social networking tools within our establishment - not Facebook etc, but within our VLE. We need to create environments within schools that are friendly and familiar to children, but of benefit to their education.

/edit: we also ban YouTube, but use it ocassionally when we can't find a better video elsewhere. Often, we get staff to download the content themselves to playback via VLC or (eventually) on the VLE.

Thanks guys

Re YouTube, due to the fact that you can have your own channel and effectively use it as a Video Blog site it does often get classed as a social network site in some educational centres, so that is why it is included with my examples. Though I do agree that it is incredibly useful, and in my particular job (AV Tech @ College) I use it a LOT!

Thanks again though! :)

Done, although I agree with the comments above ref YouTube. I also think it may be worthwhile differentiating between Schools and HE/FE - the answers may well be very different.

Done.

At the school I am currently associated with we block all social networking sites for the students. (somewhat annoyingly the staff have access to them, if it wasnt for some kind of unifed backlash I would preferably like to extend that blocking to staff too).

Youtube is open for staff but not for students. Its a hit and miss affair with youtube for staff. On the one hand there are staff members who use youtube very effectively as a resource within the larger teaching plan, on the other hand there are staff who use youtube as a huge crutch *instead* of a larger teaching plan.

done - one comment (as has been said above) is all socail websites are blocked at work, and further we have been specifically told do not become friends with any current pupils at the school (UK secondary school)

Done. Our course made it's own facebook group to organise nights out and all but by the end it was only academic stuff posted such as deadlines and important dates and generally helping one and other when away over holidays

Only time ive used facebook for my course was organising things for group coursework. would have been just as easy with email though
