Blackberry 9800 Bold Slider

It does look nice but personally im not too sure if ill get one for sure...not a fan of slider phones as they tend to be flimsy ie my nokia N95 8gb used to flex/wiggle a bit.

My wife's N95 8GB is nearly 3 years old now and no wiggle or slackness at all. It was Nokia's last great phone they have produced, they haven't produced anything better yet.
The 9800 looks a good phone, I hope it has N standard wifi support as well. Hopefully the browser will be good, but I suspect OS6 is playing catchup to Android, I don't think it will overtake it.

It doesn't have to!!...

Android (like iPhone) is aimed squarly at the 'Toy' or 'Bling' market!.. not at the Buisiness market like Blackberry!.. its a completely different beast!!..

Its more like the other way round...android is playing catch up to BB...smartphone market wise the BB's are still top with their market share....in fact Android have displaced Apple into 3rd place.

http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2010/05/android-overtakes-apple-in-us-smartphone-market.ars

Whereas BB is still second place to Symbian with regards to smartphone sales by operating system.

But both Android and BB's are different handsets aimed at different people.

As for the N95??..yeh it was a good phone but mine did have the slight wiggle but it wasnt that bad...had the phone for over a yr.

With OS6, Blackberry are looking for more integration to social networking, they are trying to diversify into the younger end of the market. Blackberry were seen as being a business phone, but BB are now looking to elbow there way into the IPhone/Android area of the market.

Yes they need to or else they will be overtaken by the likes of Android...i think its brilliant because even though OS6 is leaning more to the social integration side...you still have the business aspect of it which i cannot say the same for the iphone nor Android.

Oh no, T-mobile have just emailed me and said the Blackberry 3G is coming into stock!! My contract is up for renewal in 2 weeks!!! I am rather tempted to get the new Candy bar Pearl, I have had a play with my brother's spare 8120 and I rather liked it. The touchpad should be far superior to the old trackball on the Pearl 8120.
Contract price looks like free phone for £25 per month, inc BIS and also another free booster for unlimited internet as well.

Thats not too bad...i had a play with a pre dev pearl 3G a few mths ago and its a very nice device...much better than the previous pearls and now has 3G...only thing i didnt like was the keypad suretype or whatever its called...just couldnt get my head around it:p...too used to my 9700 Bolds keyboard now.

Just had a play with the BB Pearl 3G, O2 shop in Hull had just got them in stock this morning, in purple!!! Had a play for about 20mins with the phone connected to O2 via 3G and a full signal. First impressions, ooooohhhh the suretype keyboard - not bad but coming from an E71 qwerty and a T-Mobile Pulse touchscreen qwerty it will take a bit of practice and learning to become accustomed to it. The keyboard is slightly 'wave' shaped, but it falls nicely to your finger tips. Build quality is good but not brilliant, the 9700 Bold feels a better built phone. The touchpad feels solid and works well, having read on crackberry that a few people have had issues with the optical trackpad on the 9105, it was something I wanted to test out for myself. The browser felt quite quick and loaded up pages quickly over O2 3G network, moving through the menus and settings felt nimble with no obvious lag.
I was reasonably impressed with the 9105 or Pearl 3G, it is definately being aimed at the female end of the market as O2 have this as an exclusive in Purple, and I can see this being popular with ladies. Will I upgrade my T-mobile contract to a Pearl 3G in 2 weeks? not sure yet, I think I need more hands on experience with it. Or I could just downgrade my contract to a 30day sim only and keep on using my E71, as the E71 does everything a Blackberry can do.

Some videos to wet your appetite...using the acid tests looks like the new webkit browser from RIM/BB spanks the Android and iphone web browsers pretty much into the ground.

Looks like the 9800 slider will definitely be my next BB device..looks utterly awesome:D

When will this be on Orange do you think? My contract expires in February 2011, but I can upgrade from November 2010, so this is of considerable interest to me.

I was given a Bold 9000 at work and love it, so would love a BB for my personal phone as well. It's just so much better for composing texts etc. Especially if, like me, you're anal about using correct punctuation and capitalisation! :)

Hmmm its hard to say, ive heard that maybe it will be out by Nov/Dec time...if your contract expires in Feb 2011 then id just wait as you will get a better upgrade deal i would imagine and by then the 9800 should be out. Reason why i say this is that with tmobile they offered last time round to upgrade me early as i have been such a loyal customer with them but the early upgrade didnt give me much...so i ended up waiting a few mths for my contract to expire and then found i had much more bargaining power....dont know if Orange are similar or what.

But i would say 99% sure that by Jan/Feb of next yr the 9800 will be out on the major networks unless Orange decide not to carry it.

Thanks, i seen that article already, hope the release date will be September tho.

Meanwhile here is another video a came across on youtube, showing the setup screen of the 9800 Slider:

Yep already seen that video on Salomondrins website...really nice bootup screen compared to the boring black blackberry with a white bar showing its progress:p.

Hopefully next fri my brother arrives from Canada and will have his 9800 with him so i can have a play with it...looking forward to the OS6 and seeing what its all about etc. Although he has told me the OS he has on it at the moment is pretty buggy ie crashes a lot but thats to be expected with beta OS's.

Still not 110% sure if ill get the 9800 as im not a fan of slider phones myself plus the 9700 that i have now should run OS6 albeit a cut down version from what i have been hearing. I suppose once i know for sure whether the 9700 will run OS6 ill then make the decision on whether to jump for the 9800 or stick with the 9700 i have now.

I'll be very keen to know your opinion of it :)

Well my brothers opinion of it although being a pre-dev device is that its very very good...hes planning on getting one once they are released to the market officially and luckily for him RIM will give him one for free once hes sent the pre-dev one back.

Says its possibly the best BB device ever released and thats saying a lot....like me hes BB through and through.

Am gonna try and get him to wing one to me as well;)...save myself the odd £400 that i would probably pay sim free:p

But yes ill be giving my personal opinion of it as well.

The only thing is, even if it's released to T-Mobile at a time when I'll be wanting to upgrade - I bet it'll still cost me an arm and a leg! I may end up settling for a 9700 then picking up a 9800 once it's established - or by that time it may even be on a second revision...
