Finished my GCSE's so reallIy have nothing to do for this summer. So far the last week has basically involved waking up, gaming, reading, and watching about 10 episodes of scrubs. During the evening and at night I feel like I'm wasting time, and I feel like I'm not achieving anything. What sort of useful things can I do in the summer?

I want to study medicine, I've tried to get work at the local care home, charity shop, hospital and about 4 GP's but to no avail.

Masturbation? Get a boy/girlfriend? Go clubbing with your mates?

So many options open for your entertainment. :D

On a serious note though, you could try and get a part-time job at somewhere less fruitful, like Argos?

Obtain a creepy castle, some large step up transformers, a hunchback manservant and some body parts.

There are going to be plenty of electrical storms this summer by the looks of it so there's plenty of time to study :)

Read. I've decided to use my spare time between Sixth form and Uni reading, and I'm loving it. :)

Seriously, are the local charity shops turning you away saying they don't need help?

I know a number of people who applied to study and are currently studying medicine and you probably don't need me to tell you just how ludicrously competitive it is. Do not waste your summer. I know a number of Medicine applicants who applied for 09' who had straight As and were rejected. They subsequently had to take a gap year, volunteer, do work experience etc and reapply. Save yourself from all that. Having good academic credentials alone is not good enough.

No, the problem is that they need somebody to commit on a regular basis, and due to the fact that I'll be here only until september, apparently it's not viable because they have to train me etc.

What a load of rubbish. I bet you could pick up all you needed to know within a week, tops. Sounds like they're the type of people that just like to make excuses or make things appear harder then they really are.

Have a look on your local council website and see if they have any volunteering programs running.

Kick back, relax, chase girls, have fun with your mates and approach the new term fully recuperated and eager to learn and achieve.

I'm in the same place as you, just finished my GCSE's, also wanting to study medicine (unless I change my mind). Right now I've got a job in the week, working for my grandad, and I just tend to be going along with stuff as it comes, doing whatever I want, whenever I want. I would like an actual job though, as nobody is going to take a reference from a family member seriously.

I was actually considering studying for my A-levels early to make the workload easier when I get there, but I'm not sure where to start, what A-levels are you taking?

Hi mate, me being a nerd, I'm doing 3 sciences and further maths.
I asked my biology teacher what I could do to prepare for the course. He suggested

www.biologymad.com

apparently the board we're doing (AQA) has changed its syllabus so a few of the things are irrelevant.

Does sound rubbish tbh. I'd imagine any charity shop would jump at the chance of free help. I was a volunteer at SCOPE as well as a friend during my second year of uni, they jumped at the chance. I was trained on the tills and the majority of stuff on the shop floor within the first two weeks iirc, and that was only going in once a week. 9am-2pm They never said anything about needing regular commitment for a set time, although it is a good idea. Theres no reason why you can't volunteer on a weekend. Then they have no complaints really tbh.

Indeed, the local council should have plenty of volunteer jobs on their website, charities, care workers, public properties (old buildings and the like where they do tours). At least they do for wolverhampton.

If i were in your position I'd jump at the chance to earn some money/ work experience tbh.
