Should it be making a screeching sound when playing games such as Crysis, Fallout 3 etc

Had several gfx cards over the years but this is first time I have ever heard a gfx card making a screeching sound everytime I play games or videos, it doesnt do it all the time but when im playing power hungry games the gfx card is making a loud noise like its hungrier for more power, I have a 650w power supply so have enough power.

OCUK say its normal but I doubt that very much considering my mate had same sort of setup as me and plays same games and for last 8 months it hasnt made a sound

Probably just a noisy capacitor on the gfx mate. A lot of cards get it including my 4870X2, but it's very hit and miss. Some people get it some people don't even if they both have the same card. It's nothing really to worry about and shouldn't effect your gaming at all.

Having said that what power supply have you got and how old is it?

Also is the sound definitely coming from the gpu and not the psu?

the PSU is brand new because the old one(from ebay) broke, its 650w and ispowering an ASUS P57ND, QC9550, 4gb ram, 1gb HD and GFX card as above...

The PC is my sons and he has Aspergers so constantly worries about the noise and thinks it is going to break, as I say it only makes the noise when playing high end games and only happened atfer the PSU was changed 4 weeks ago

As long as it aint going to fry the MB, he can play his games still, he wears earphones as he plays a lot online and so he doesnt hear the noise...

If it's the gfx card then it will be capacitor squeal my 5770 used to get it but you either get used to it or it calms down my new 5850 does it but only when running msi kombuster when overclocked to 950/1200 shouldn't worry too much unless it's coming from your psu

What brand of psu is it mate? And I'd check the sound is definitely not coming from the psu whether it's new or not just to rule it out.

A lot of cards have coil whine or capacitor squeal. I've had it on several myself. Sometimes it gets better over time. It doesn't mean the card is going to fail.

my sapphire 4890 sounds like a hair drier when it's up full whack, but no screaching.

dust in the fan blades? get the hoover and give it a quick suck and if there's dust in hard to reach places get some cocktail sticks.
