Apologies in advance for yet another noob upgrade thread chaps. My problem is this. I've just built myself a new build - Q6700, 700w CoolerMaster psu, Asus P5Q Pro, 4gig OCZ ddr2 - and waiting on the HD. I did have an old Asus 4850 from my previous computer to put in this one as a stop gap until next year, but that caught fire in my old case so I'm cardless atm. I was toying with getting another 4850 from here for the very good price of £70, but I'm starting to get itchy feet and fancy going a bit higher now.

So, I have a budget of about £150 (I can go about £10 more if pushed, but once you add P+P on and just a little more, before you know it you're spending masses more than you wanted to) and play in 1680x1050 mainly. What are my best options?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I was looking at that, but isn't the general consensus seems to be the 1gig version or nothing? And doesn't the Palit have cooler and noise problems, or is that confined to the platinum version?

I saw a Palit GTX460 768MB for like £144 at another etailer. Sure the Palit cooler does seem to have noise issue, but for £144 and that kind of performance I don't think you can complain :p

Did it literally catch fire?

460 is your best bet at the moment, you'd have to wait a long while for anything better to arrive on the scene.

Yep. I saw an orange glow from the back of the case and thought " I don't have any LED's" and then smelled the burning, so switched it off before it engulfed anything else. Couple of nice, burnt out chips on the card now.

Yeah, erring between the 460 and the 8530. I just know from reading on here the issues with the lower mem and now the noise/cooling of the 460's.

I think that was the platinum version

and there isn't that much of a gap between the two at your resolution, nothing that can't be fixed with an overclock
