4850 is a good card but i would rather stretch to a 5750 for not a lot more as it will last a lot longer

No. 4850 and 5750 is not that much faster than the 8800GT...probably around 10~12% faster. The 10~12% faster is not worth £70.

To actually see decent amount improvement over your 8800GT, you would need to at least get either a GTX460 or 5830.

Also, have your tried overclocking your 8800GT? From what I recall it overclock fairly well.

It's the OC version and wont overclock any further without overheating...

Didn't realise the 8800gt and 4850 were so evenly matched..

I've seen a second hand Asus ATI Radeon HD 4870 HTDI 512 for £74 elsewhere...would that be worth it over my 8800?

For £70? As i stated that is my max budget.
Then don't upgrade just yet. £70 is not going to get your a card that's worth your money to see significant extra performance over your 8800GT. You need to save up to get either 4890, 5830 or GTX460 to justify what you are paying for, which is "upgrade".

I think you best bet is probably a 2nd hand 4890 1GB, but you need to stretch to around £90~£100.

Wait for 6000 series it will come in fall this year, will reduce price on current cards and maybe introduce something that you might want to buy.

I have 8800gts and have held back on upgrading my graphics card.

I am not in the position to spend ££££s on one so I normally wait until I have not choice but to upgrade.

The depreciation on graphics cards is pretty high if you can hold out.

Just bumping this up as i still haven't bought a new card! Budget now at around £100 so at that price is there anything worth getting to give a decent boost over my current 8800GT?

As spirits247 said, the 275 in the members market is a bargain. Might not be new but its slightly faster than the 4890 and the better buy of the 2.

All three cards the 5770, GTX 275 and 4890, will give a big increase over a 8800GT. Not sure on %, but that's what Google is for. It will be significant however, like 30-50% depending on your CPU.

4890 and GTX 275 are quite similar in performance, but pull quite a bit of power (say 170-200W under load). Some models can also be a little noisy, especially in 3D. The 5770 is slower (same as a 4870) but has DX11 and uses about half the power of the other two cards. 5770 also has the lowest idle/windows/2D power, at a mere 18W.

Another option is to save for a 1GB GTX 460, the darling card of the moment, or wait a few more months until ATI's new cards are out.

Hmmmm a GTX 460 1GB looks like a great card. Wonder what sort of performance i'd get with that and the rest of my PC in my sig?

Been reading a lot about the "8800GT effect" (Close to a high-end performance for a mainstream price) which was what made me buy my 8800GT in the first place. If i can get a GTX 460 1GB for the £100 mark would this be considered a new "8800GT effect"?!

You will probably find your CPU will hold you back, particularly if you're playing CPU intensive games. It's best to work out what you want to play better first and then upgrade accordingly.
