Should I sell?

Right, I've had my Cupra 4 for 2 years now and I've spent a grand total of € 7500 on it, excluding fuel and insurance.
However, around € 2000 is servicing and tyres.

That leaves almost five thousand on repairs, however I had to do some things in Norway (like spend £500 on a new outer CV joint..)
It had a big service this summer and it'll need new winter tyres after this season should I choose to buy more, which means that now would be a good time to sell.

I really don't want to plow any more money into this thing as I know the turbo will blow up eventually and I can't be arsed with that, nor anything else expensive such as a new clutch, etc..

It's coming up to 150,000 km which isn't a lot, but it means that I can advertise it under the 150,000 km barrier which means more people would potentially see it.
IMO once it goes above I won't be able to get as much for it.
The paintwork is stone chipped and scratched to buggery, and rust is starting to bubble in two places, as well as some things not working (AC, my bum warmer).
Would it make sense to keep it for much longer?
It's mechanically sound, uses no oil and I've had no problems from the engine block as such.

I'd like a change, and I'm starting a 40 mile return motorway commute next month which means minimal town driving, unlike now.
A nice petrol would be aural pleasure after this tractor engine..

As for replacement cars, I can't think of much that'll cost less to run than this :p

The thing is finding a replacement.

This has cruise control, auto dimming and folding mirrors, a sun roof, [one] heated seat, OBC, etc etc.
It literally has everything except Sat Nav.

There's **** all else around for this price over here, which is annoying.
Not sure if I could live without cruise control, and I'm currently looking at bangernomics, and old BMWs, Saabs and Volvos with cruise are hard to come by.

Shame on me for thinking everyone who posts on OcUK lives in UK. :o

What kind of performance values are you expecting in your next car? What's your next budget? I'm sure the budget will depend on how much you get for the car so how much are you expecting it to sell for?

I think you should sell the car. From the sounds of your post it seems like you're looking for an excuse for a change. Do it! :)

You should never have bought it so hell yea you should sell it :p
Care to elaborate? :p

Isn't cruise illegal to use on Belgian Motorways anyway?
No, only on one very busy stretch of motorway between Brussels and Antwerp.

Excellent suggestion for somebody considering bangernomics
I'm considering everything at the moment. There was an Alpina E36 B6 for only €5,000 the other month and it looked mint. Should have bought it :(

There was also a mint 2 owner FULL spec 735i for €4,000 which also looked superb and the advert was removed this morning..

£500 for a CV Joint!? Holy moly that's expensive!

What do you fancy getting?
Yeah, VW main dealers in Norway charge over £100 an hour for labour. VAT is 25%, plus shipping, plus plus.. It was completely destroyed though, so I got my money's worth out of the original :p

I really don't know. I want something relatively quick, comfortable and preferrably well spec'd. Fast Saabs are on my list, but they're few and far between and I don't want to travel half way across Europe for my next car.

3.0 S90/960 do look appealing, if ridiculously thirsty.
They're all around 200,000 miles though, which does seem a tad on the high side..

what about a smaller volvo

S80 or the S60 ?
Unfortunately I don't live in the UK and thus prices are higher. If I change, I want to spend as little as possible and then get something nice and expensive in a year's time.

Early S80s are pretty much the same as S90s, and I'd rather have the latter.
Someone on here had an S80 an said it kept breaking/costing lots to fix.

Saab 9-5, that will have all the extras you want.
Indeed, but I don't want a 150 or 170 bhp LPT.
Do you have any experience of the V6 Turbo? I've seen a few Griffins around here.

But again, these are all around 150 - 200,000 miles, and I'd rather have a Volvo at that mileage than a 9-5.
And I don't want an estate.

The V6 turbo in the 9-5 is the same as the one in my old Vectra VXR

averaged about 24mpg with mixed driivng. Got 30mpg on a run. Lovely kick in the mid range. Doesnt like to be rev'd though. Redline is at 6k and power was dropping by 5500 revs.

No cambelt to change which is a plus, needs new sparks every 3 years or 60k miles which the dealers say are difficult to get at so main dealers will charge you extra for them.

Great engine, worked well with an auto box in the vectra elite as a motorway cruncher.

Get an Aero there are more of those about than the V6's and Griffins.

Or maybe try and get another year out of yours if that's all you need a new one for before getting something nice.

That seems very high on the miles, they must make more money there than here.

Sure....aside from them being almost completely different. For a start the S80 is FWD, the S90 RWD....
Yeah, I'm not quite sure what I meant by that :o
I'd rather have an S90 though at this price range.

Residuals in the UK are possibly the worst in the world.
Saab 9-5s are cheap over here too, but you're still looking at £3-4k for a good one, which is about as high as I'd like to go for the moment.
The old Saab engines are bomb proof if serviced properly, so the key is to find one which has been looked after well.
I'm strangely drawn to the 9000 too, probably because we had 3 when I was a kid.

I'd quite happily keep mine for another year, but I just want something quieter. The rattly roof and the tractor engine are getting annoying.
That, and I know the turbo will explode if I keep it, hence the thread.. I just don't know whether it's worth the risk.

If it was me, id blow a grand fixing that if it dies, rather than blow 2 on depreciation on something else.

But when you need a change you need a change, get a 4k Aero :)

I've already spent £5k on repairs, I think I'll cry if I have to spend another grand.
That, and a powerful 10 year old Saab at the bottom of the market is going to depreciate less in a year than a diesel Leon which is currently on 90k miles.
