Renting - Suggestions in London? (£900-1100)

Looking for suggestions on where to live.

I will be moving in with my girlfriend and we are looking to spend around £250 a week.

We have a few requirements and by looking at Foxtons and PrimeLocation, it seems to be possible.

We want obviously the 1 bedroom but also a balcony. We're also a little bit fussy about the appearance so we are ideally looking for a Victorian style property or something modern but not a council looking building. :o

We haven't narrowed it down at all but so far East London and Brixton seem to be coming up trumps when it comes to finding things. Ideally, again, we'd like to be close to a tube station.

So any ideas? :p
 
Problem with London is that actually SW London (Chelsea, Fulham, Putney, Richmond or even further away Kingston, Epsom etc) is the nicest (some people might disagree) but at the same time you can find some decent places to live in South, SE London. Commuting every day from further away can cost a lot.

Have you been or even lived there? Brixton isn't the best part of London, but it's certainly not the worst :p

Depends. What particular areas are you thinking of when making such sweeping generalisations? Some roads an areas in Brixton are very pleasant indeed, and I don't even live there.

To the OP, if you want new build (although I know oh said you like Victorian properties) take a look around Royal Victoria out in the Docklands. The girlfriend an I spent 3 very happy years out that way in a couple of very nice flats indeed.
 
Visited a friend's place over near Queensway and it seemed alright over there, pretty central , ~£1k per month.

I would be of the opinion that anything in Queensway for around £1K p/m is going to either a studio flat or in a bad state. Might be wrong though.

I've heard this before, can you elaborate?

From what i see, they seem to have the most detailed properties around with very good images and floorplans.

They said they charge £320 in agent fees for whatever property, regardless of the rent. So split in 2 for myself and my girlfriend, that seems alright...?
 
Docklands. Britannia Village, or Virginia Key really spring to mind.

We've got a 2 bed flat with a massive terrace for £230 per week in Britannia Village. Built in the 90s, duel fuel, secure parking, very quiet area yet only 5 mins from the bustle. Also have some nice restaurants and a bar within easy walking distance. DLR 2mins walk.


Another vote for steering well clear of Foxtons. £320 admin fee?! Get stuffed! "Statement of Intent" as well as deposit? Taking the ****! They have hidden fees, too. Checkout will cost you £200+ with Foxtons.

Brixton is actually a decent place, and not as bad as people think it is. I'm sure most people that say "don't live in brixton blah blah" have never even been there, but I can assure you it's not like it used to be and it is very decent, far worse places around in London.

I would look at Balham, Battersea and Clapham as well.

I have lived in south east London (Deptford), north London (Highgate) and west london (Barons Court).

I have always liked west out of the lot, but you have to pay the premium.

Fulham & Parsons Green are fantastic areas.
