MK4 VW Golf engine undertrays.. important or not?

Well having just had more or less the entire right hand underside of my car destroyed by some crap in the outside lane of a dual carriageway I must say I'm very glad I had my (now sadly dead) undertray fitted, as I am sure it protected the pipework at the front of the engine from being nuked by an enormous sheet of perspective.

So now I only need to replace the entire undertray system and the external temp sensor and all the brackets and the wheel arch liner, not the rest of the car as well

I put some new ones on when I got the car.
They flew off as I cracked 200km/h the other month :o
Thankfully no one was behind me but that could have been nasty..

The dealer would have had it off a few weeks before so I went there and he was angry that I wanted a replacement free of charge
In the end he sourced a second hand one which I am yet to fit, but he'll probably charge me if I do so I'm not sure if I can be bothered..

my undertray took a battering on my golf but never fell off. there is a bit of trim on the rear axle/fuel tank area that did come off though and started dragging along the floor at 50mph, i was totally unprepared for the sound and nearly jumped out my skin and ended up in a hedge

Nothing, nothing at all compares to the pure fail that is the 156 GTA undertray.

It's not a tray, and it's hardly ever under the car properly. Next time it rubs a speedbump/undulation/ant, it's getting ripped off permanently. 4 times in 4 months, and counting.

When you find out the cost, you might just want to consider scrapping the E39..... :(

Ran around for a year with no problems (and there are all varieties of speedhump round here) after re-attaching mine with nylon string. Had to make a new hole as the brief time it was hanging off it scraped away the mounting hole on the tray itself.
If you can bodge it then it "should" be fine, just stick a rubber grommet thingy in any new holes you make and it'll be fine (it's been on that way for nearly 2yrs on my old car, and the mechanic (vw spec) has no issues with it)).

Edit: the old car is owned by my bro in law and is still local to me and he is a complete idiot when it comes to high kerbs/bumps etc so it's not like it hasn't been regularly bashed).

Do you have a part number? Woods quoted £750 for the undertray "kit"

Sure..

Bits either side of the main tray are 51717896607 and 51717896608. Dealer retail on these is £9.86. It's actually the right hand one of these that has been destroyed on my car but sadly for the E39 the part is £70. The main tray itself I cannot get a part number for but it's more or less the same as the equivilent E39 part which is £196.

stormster. did you ever refit the undertray, if not, and if you dont wanna it, id happily take it off your hands :P

No mate never bothered, gonna keep hold of it for when I sell the car though.

Nothings gone bang yet in the engine bay without the tray underneath, about the most solid bit of the car is in that area haha.

Will do :) You had a look on edition38, golfgtiforum and mk-ivs.net? Often worth a punt for such stuff. Will keep me eyes peeled though.
