Folding@home News 9th - 16th July 2010

Case cooling helps a lot actually. It's the bottom card in my case at the moment so gets plenty of 'fresh' air. 105ºC is slightly toasty :D I was getting temps like that on all my graphics cards when I had four in there folding, was having to clock back on all of them, nightmare :o

Mr Biffa sah i think i asked you once before so forgive me if i am repeating myself, can you run seti on gpu and fold on it at the same time or is it too problematic to do? Cheers :)

yes you can mate. I used to do sei on the cpu and fold on the gpu all the time

I think you many have not quite understood the question correctly (either that or I have got it very wrong). What he's asking is can you fold with the GPU and do SETI with the GPU at the same time. I know you can run 3 SETI tasks on the Fermi GPUs at once but Folding seems to use more of the GPU per WU. It may be possible due to the large availability of cores and improved cache management in the Fermi series, but I can't see it being a good idea.

On one card? No, the folding core maxes out the Fermi gpu.
On two cards with one doing seti and one doing folding? Well that would depend on Boinc really, with folding you can specifiy the gpu you want to use (you need one client for each gpu) but with Boinc I don't know if you can say "only use gpu0 or gpu1"

There is a 'ignore GPU x' command for the CC_config file if i remember correctly but i've never had the need for it so not sure where it was. So with 2 cards it should be possibe ;)

EDIT
found it

<ignore_cuda_dev>n</ignore_cuda_dev>
<ignore_ati_dev>n</ignore_ati_dev>
Fill in the device number of the GPU you do not want to use. Can be used for multiple GPUs, one line per GPU. Reminder: Zero will disable device zero, it does not disable the line, only removal does.

Thanks for the input guys. I had tried the multiple instances of fah but couldn't get it right sounds as though i should stick with seti if one is going to drastically impact on the other....worth a try though :)
