Am I right in saying that if a uniformed officer is just standing by the roadside holding some kind of speed measuring device that if they clock you over the speed limit they have to send a patrol car / bike to pull you over and they are not allowed to send NIP in the post?

I thought post was just for speed cameras be they mobile or fixed.

You sure it wasn't a community speed enforcer (I think that's what they're called?)

Either way, I think they have to stop you on the spot if they don't have video evidence?

No idea - was Hill Lane in Southampton just before midnight, guy in a reflective jacket holding a speed-gun. Didn't get pulled over, doubt I'll get anything in the post but just double checking!

One of the drivers at work was clocked doing 36 in a 30 by an officer with a hand-held speedgun. Received a NIP in the post. I had always believed that they had to pull you over and give you a ticket.

You want to be careful there, they do that road a lot as it's very easy to go over the 30 limit, feels much more like a 40 road.

If they are volunteers (they usually wear fluresent jackets and are more than 1 of them, most of the time they have deck chairs lol. Anyway, they just send you a letter, cant do ****. So if he/she was one of them you would be fine...

I'm awaiting to see if anything has happened when I came across a police officer sitting in his car pointing the gun at motorway traffic, when I was tonking it up the outside lane on the way back from Nottingham last Sunday, lol.

I saw a news piece on this some time ago. Basically, the Community Enforcers just make a note of the registration and forward it to the Police who send you a warning letter, advising you to observe posted speed limits. If there are multiple breaches then one morning you'll find it's the boys in blue holding the speed gun instead, and you're buggered ;)

Once upon a time, last year, en route to the office, the usual route of which speed is normally something of great, i found myself stuck behind a Sunday Driver, coming upto the National > 30MPH Sign i spotted a man propped up against the Speed Sign with a Hair Dryer, i lol'd thinking he must've escaped from the nut house, then i noticed it was a copper, further down the lane, there they were, a flock of them waving in any speeding drivers, on the spot...

Lucky i was stuck behind said Sunday Driver.

EDIT - PS, Bugone, i still find myself looking at your portfolio just to see the missus (if she is your missus) those 100 hits, must all be me.

Ha ha, yes she's still my missus. I should really add the pictures of her with the Baja to the profile.

I took them before I 'ruined' her. She's now 6 months pregnant, so is a bit more rounded. :p

Screen Shot or it never happened!

Postal NIP or flagged down at the roadside? Until now I've only ever seen them on the avenue with the handhelds.

Don't know about postal or stopped but they do indeed target Hill Lane and Winchester Road a lot, The Avenue stuff is normally an ANPR team though with a few bikes and sometimes a pursuit car up nearer The Cowherds rather than for speeding.
