Guys

I have been to look at a 07 plate mark 5 Golf GT TDI 170bhp this afternoon and am considering buying .

Needs a few things done that I can get sorted very easily , couple of questions if you please ?

1. What are they like to live with in general , any major faults or things to look out for ?

2. Driven sensibly what sort of MPG should I get , it,s a manual 6 speed ?

3. Is the engine a chain or belt ,it,s just done 50,000 miles and I don,t want to have to replace a belt in 10,000 miles ?

I have the 140GT but its almost the same :D

You'll want to watch the DPF, give it some gas now and again.

45-50mpg should be easy driven normally.

Belt on the 140 is changed every 4 years or 40,000 miles, don't know if the 170 is different.

I have the same engine in my A3. Whilst it's a good unit with plenty of poke and reasonably refined for a four-pot diesel, the fuel consumption is noticably worse than the 140PS version of the same period (I've had both) so you might want to factor this into your decision. It also, as mentioned, has the particulate filter which the 140PS of the time lacked and which can cause hassle if the car is used for mainly urban trips.

The engine was updated/replaced in 2008 with a new fully common rail unit (the original was still the older Pumpe Duse technology) which I believe offers better economy.

I have one (manual, 6 speed, 2007) and I love it. Loads of torque (seriously, loads) and will match/beat a GTI over a 1/4 mile.

I do a lot of urban miles and average 38-40mpg. Motorway miles you can be looking at 45mpg if you're sensible.

If you're into that sort of thing you can get a bipass for the particulate filter for more performance. You can also chip it to just over 200bhp.

No problems so far but mine's only done 18k.

Ive just picked one of these up as a hire car today whilst mine is in for repair and ive got to be honest i cant see it beating a GTI over quater mile. Its quick to 50 ish and is desperately out of puff above 80

^Agree'd. To be honest i cant see what all the fuss is over Golf's. If id bought one id be seriously disapointed with it.

This is a GT model...Grand Touring? Costs somewhere in the region of £20k when new. It has heated leather seats, electric windows, aircon and thats about it. No steering wheel controls for the stereo?? Cant remember ever driving a car without steering controls. It also has no cruise control which very much suprised me.

I also dont find it that thrilling to drive. Its better than the Golf 1.9 Match that i had until this became available. The Match felt like its steering wheel and wheels werent even connected.

Im not sure how this car is like for like as the hire company promised me considering i drive a 280bhp Astra...however its better than being stuck in a Micra or Aygo that i guess my insurance company would have provided me with.
