*Official OMG I got my 460 thread*

I'm just about to RMA a Palit GTX 460 Sonic 1gb, non platinum (from a different supplier) due to the fan noise, and inferior cooling solution compared to the Platinum version, which wasn't made clear on the Palit site.

After a lot of fiddling I had managed to get it reasonably quiet and cool by using the MSI afterburner utility but I wasn't happy with the out-of-the-box experience.

The problem with the fan is that it's very whiny, and under the built-in fan profile the whining noise is very irritating as it ramps up. By contrast the cooler on my old 8800GTS is very quiet and just makes a whooshing noise when it ramps up.

I was very satisfied with the card from a performance point of view. It overclocked to the Platinum speeds with no problems and it didn't get excessively hot, but it's obvious that the cooler is inferior to the better brands out there.

My experience was also soured by the fact that Palit sent out cards to reviewers in the UK without heat-sinks on the VRM chips, and with a much quieter default fan profile - plus of course there were no reviews for the standard version, only the Platinum version, and though the two versions may look identical in the pictures they're not - the standard version has a very basic heat-sink with no heat-pipes.

I'm planning to get a Gigabyte or MSI card once my refund comes through.

I assume you meant to the reviewers with* heat sinks? :)

Thanks for your thoughts though, they may well fall in line to what will be experienced with the gainward gs model, which equals the sonic on specs. I will know tomorrow as it should finally arrive and I'll share my thoughts here.

I won't be happy if it has an inferior cooler and a whiny fan though!

There is a bios update by the way for your card which makes the fan profile quieter.

The fan is really only very noisy when it gets above 60%, but it is a very irritating whine. I wear open 5.1 headphones for gaming and they do a very good job of filtering out the low-frequency fan noise, leaving the high pitched whining even more noticable. Some people may not find it annoying but I did.

I saw the new bios, but on the Palit site it says it's for the the Platinum card, and I have/had the non-platinum version.

did you open the box and that?

Yep, they just seal it back up. Or not perhaps. I've received several items from OcUK before that other people had used as it wasn't sealed and had finger marks on it! :p

It works just the same though so there's no real difference.

I just checked the palit product page for the sonic, and there's no bios download. Strange, when for the gainward gs model there's a bios download.

The palit product page for the sonic platinum does not list a bios update, it's buried on their support faq, just to recap:
