Nokia E72 vs C3 (S60 v.s. S40)

K I'm looking for a new messaging phone, that is pretty much 99% of what I use my phone for, I have an Archos for web browsing and multimedia and a TZ7 for snaps, so most fancy smart phone features don't bother me. Price isn't a huge issue if it's worth it, so as long as it's not wasted money I'm happy to spend it.

What are the key differences that I'll notice purely using the phone for messaging (and possibly music on occasion)? I'd be getting the E72 over the C3 if the C3 has a huge problem, not if the E72 has more features I'll never use. I realise the E72 has a faster processor and a better OS, but what are the actual differences? I realise review sites say S40 feels more cut back, but cut back where exactly? I'll have next to no use for 3G on a screen that small so that's not a deciding factor.

Thanks :)

The E72 is far the better phone, the build quality is superb. The C3 feels plasticy were the E72 is a nice alloy construction. I have had the E71 for 17mths now, it is still scratch free and in mint condition. The E series are dependable, reliable business class phones. They blow the BB 8250 and 8900 out of water and compete well with the BB9700.

I believe Virginmobile are doing the E72 for £15 a month including 100mins, 500texts and 500mb data allowance and the phone is free on a 24mth contract.

Ewww 24month contract :S

Have you actually held the C3? All review sites have said the C3 feels like it's a high quality product and praise how well built it is? Obviously not as much as the E72 but that's a lot more expensive? Text is 99% of what I'm using it for and on a 320*240 screen I'm not gonna get a lot of use out of a data contract :D

^^ What he said

Considering an X10 Mini pro as well depending on how well it works as a mp3 player, found some decent deals on it, looks reasonable enough to me, will have to get my hands on one before I decide.

The main question is the functionality lost between S40 and S60, as a slightly higher quality isn't enough to tempt me away from the C3 if it's between the two Nokia's right now.

E71/E72 if you want/need GPS, E63 if you don't.

E63 has most features of the E71 including S60 OS, and although has no GPS can still download maps from OVI to be used as a pocket map etc.

Personally wouldn't buy a S40 phone, they are more limited in what they can do regarding applications and phone management.

S60 E-Series are the best for what you are after (Blackberry would also be good if you wanted email as well).

Most things tbh, calender, phonebook and messaging S60 usually has much more options and useability over S40, lots of little touchs which make the phone more useable.

Plus S60 allows more apps to be installed than S40 like MSN messenger, accuweather, iplayer or 3rd party sat navs like garmin and tom tom for example.

Best thing todo is go and play with the C3 and the E72 and see which you prefer in terms of OS, OS on the E72 is pretty much identicle to the E71 and E63 so if you preferred it you could always look at the older handsets instead of the newer and more expensive flagship E series (there isn't a huge ammount of things different between the E72/71/63 tbh, I own a E71 and E63 so can point out the positives of one over the other).

You may find you prefer the simplicity of S40 over S60 but I find it just annoys me.

The bigger problem as I'd see it is S40 has close to zero multitasking vs S60 which can multitask. Also S40 is limited to pretty much just java apps while S60 can take any .sis/sisx via sideloading or anything on the ovi store.

The E series are business workhorses and excel at Mail, Calendar, that sort of thing. If you have a need for that then you're looking at the right devices.

It crashed almost daily even with the latest firmware. Only provision for one exchange account (I have multiple). Poor button press (sticking keys) and generally ageing software.

Odd, never had any sticking keys on the E71 or any crashes and thats since may last year, was used hell of a lot too.

Had heard the quality of the E72 was a lil behind that of the E71 though, especially loudspeaker performance, haven't heard of any issues with crashing though.

If I had the choice again, I would honestly have gone with the E71 despite it being the older phone. It was a lot more polished (literally)
