My Partners phone has finally died and she is looking for a replacement, but I don't really follow the phone market much outside of the Android handsets.

She simply wants a phone that's good at 2 things, Being a phone and being a good Camera. Any suggestions on a model of phone that would do this on a cheap contract?

Thanks

Rather than start a new thread I feel the need to ask a similar question. The last phone I had was, I think, a Sony Ericsson K350i. I read about something called 'Android', iphone4, Blackberry and one or two other names that escapes me. I'm not sure I like the idea of a touch screen though I wouldn't necessarily scrap the idea of getting one.
Having been under the impression that the iphone was apparently the best, lately I hear that Android is perhaps superior in some respects? I know very little about phones compared to PC's.

Any advice much appreciated. Not sure whether to go contract or pay as you go.

Sorry to barge in the thread but it may help both of us, there's so much choice out there, it's mind boggling.

Android is the best platform for customisation and (usually) price.

The iPhone is more simple and slightly better from a 'quality' and hardware perspective (the iPhone 4 is anyway).

If you want to ask some more specific questions about what you use the phone for, I (and others) will be happy to answer them.

With the vast amount of phones around at the moment you really need some specifics to recommend things accurately.

Thanks Robboftw, will post back later with details when I've finished some work, then you can spec me a new phone! :)

Ok back now. I would say that from having spoken to people so far it seems that you can get a great phone like the iphone (for example) for around £20 - £30 per month but I don't think I'd get that much monies worth use out of it and I'm not 'yet' sure that I'd be willing to part with that much per month. Apart from calls I would use the phone for email / general net use and maybe the odd downloadable game. I guess I'm after the best for the least in cost.

I am in no hurry to buy so I'll check out Vodafone, Orange etc before I make my purchase. Is the range of phones very limited for pay as you go?

Thanks. :)

Just been looking at the Pay as You Go phones, not sure what is the best out there. T mobile site has a lot to choose from.

£35 a month for a Galaxy S (looks great), just seems a lot for features I 'might' not use. On the other hand I don't want to go for something from the PAYG range then wish I'd got something a lot better.

Talking to an advisor now, might look at the Galaxy S, pay for phone up front then just pay £10 for 24 months. Might be the overall cheapest and lowest monthly way of doing it.

Reasonably helpful I suppose, but really her job to find me the best deal rather than expect me to go search the site while she waits. Maybe she thought I was winding her up when I suggested she put the kettle on, oh and by the way, does she have any custard creams to go with my lactose free cuppa.

Ok, cheaper to buy the phone out right and then just pay £10 per month. Amounts to £540. Now I only need to look at other phones on other websites arrghh!

How do people find the tariffs fair with Orange say versus T-Mobile and others etc?

If you can wait a few weeks now, you might want to look at the Nokia N8. Google nokia n8 comparison desire iphone or something.

Everything I have seen of this so far suggests it will be another fairly average Nokia phone :(

With regards to the Samsung Galaxy S, that or the HTC Desire is your best bet if you want the best for the least money, they are very well priced (compared to the iPhone at least) :p

Both are fantastic phones.

Thanks fellas. :) Comparing everything atm, seems like Tmobile @ £10 per month and paying up front for the phone is the best way forward. Looks like the Galaxy S is thee current top phone. Haven't looked much at Blackberry or iphone, yet.

I'd say the Galaxy S is level with the iPhone 4 at the moment, they are both quite different and both very good.

However, the iPhone 4 is not really worth £150 upwards extra, at all. (Its also worse at making calls, as you've probably heard)

You must've missed the part where you get free turn by turn voice navigation, video calls not just over wireless networks, the 12mp carl zeiss lens with xenon flash, expandable (unlike restricted other phones) memory storage, class leading 720p HDMI output, sexy anodised aluminium chassis, probable Comes With Music on release, etc etc... Yeah perfectly average :p

Im not saying other phones arent great as well, it really does depend what you are looking for from your phone. The iphone's best redeeming quality is its apps store. If only you could make phone calls with it...

Anyway, an objective comparison (doesnt include HTC desire)

Nokia n8 will be probably at the £30/ month price point but if you check your favourite money saving website, you'll probably find some great deals maybe even with cashback upon release. Of the phones currently available at this exact moment, HTC desire seemed better to me than galaxy S, but that was due to the look of the phone, since they are very similar phones tbh. Again, check your favourite moneysaving websites for cashback / other discounts on phone contracts. You should be able to get a desire or galaxy for £17/month with 500gb data.

Just because it comes with these things, does not mean it does them well.

As I've said before, its best factor will (probably) be the camera, from an OS point of view it's way behind Android.
