Look, it may gripe you to no end, but just hold this thought and life should be pleasent.

'Atleast we don't speak American English!'

I know devolution doesn't exist, but American English certainly is an argument for it! :D

What you seem to be griped with is an accent 'Nah wot ah meen laaike', 'arrite', 'wha chew trippin foo'.

language is a tool we use to communicate, a tool that changes to the weilders needs. It's akin to being griped by the way someone holds a pen or a screw driver!

.."you alright?" (making it sound like "yourrite") or even "Alright?" instead of "Hello" or "Good Afternoon" or even just "Hi". I was in Sainsbury's today and this girl said " You alright?" with no smile on her face. Common as muck :p. It's a petty point I know, but why don't these places train their staff to speak a little more professionally instead of these girls sounding like they think you're their mate from down the road. Is it really that difficult to say "Hello" or do these chavy girls get embarrassed to speak proper english :p

COOL STORY... BRO!

Yes, well, I was there, and by the tone of the way she said it, it was not an enquiry to my health or mental state, so don't tell me what you think she was implying. Saying 'arrrright?' is just crap imo. I was taught to say hello to people. It's REALLY easy. It's people like you and many others in this thread that don't care how others speak which is why the english language is going downhill fast.

Maybe you should try saying it about 800 times a day to people who about 90% of the time either don't care or are just rude to you in return. A week of that would reduce even the most well mannered to "arrrright".

Yes, because arrrrright is so much easier as it has so many fewer syllables than hello.

a lot of that is accent and pronunciation. You're a language racist. :p

I unashamedly am, yes :D

If you earned 4 quid an hour or whatever they get you probably wouldnt aim for perfection either, leave the girl alone.

I find the snobs in this thread hilarious, it's like you have a heart attack when you hear anything but Hello or Good Afternoon.

Girl: 'You alright?'
You: 'AHHH!!!'
Girl: ''

It reminds of Fallout 3 when you meet Gob for the first time and you get the option of 'Gah! ****!'

The thing with this is
Is greeting people polite?
Yes.
Did she greet you?
Yes.
Get over it then really lol

At the end of the day jobs like working in a supermarket are far more boring/ strenous than most of your jobs if you are 22+ i doubt the prospect if serving customer after customer sat in a seat over and over fills her with much excitement

Everyone works for money at the end iff the day
Do i greet everyone where i work. No but then the queue is always out the door so do you think bobby backofthequeue cares more about me taking three times aslong with him being polite or more about me getting his food chucking it in a bag MAYBE offering him something and then giving him change

You have to ask yourself then why some of these people work for supermarkets if it's so goddamn boring. Probably because they can't command the english language well enough to get any other job.

Well no its probably because there young
Yes it could be what you said but who hasnt worked in a shop at some point
I dont see much of an issue to be honest
The older people i work with that are say 30 etc are all intelligent really
One girl i work with is like 23 i think and doing psychology but maybe if you came in and bought something you might have that opinion unfairly

Most older women work in supermarkets are mothers that just want decent school friendly hours and a but more money in the household
I have no problem with that really

What a pure ******, what job do you do with you're magnificent command of the English language out of curiosity?

Most people who work on the tills in retail are:

a) retired and getting paid to supplement their pension/pass the time
b) mothers earning a little extra for the family/single mothers earning extra to supplement their child benefits because they can't afford a carer
c) students who quite frankly don't care if you leave feeling that they've been rude because they've addressed you using something other than your decorum greetings.

However, since when was using slang greetings (not that I consider 'Y'alright? to be particularly slang in a world filled with "innit brap brap yo" or whatever) a pure indication of intelligence?

And since when was using slang indicative of not having a full command of the English language? Perhaps she just doesn't care enough? Perhaps she went home and continued to write her future literary masterpiece using a command of the English language that would make Stephenie Meyer jealous?

Don't judge a book by it's cover, an' all that. Although I don't work on the tills so what do I care...
