Modern Warfare 2 is going P2P.

Ok.

Josh Olin Treyarch Community manager:

No, you will not have to 'pay to play' multiplayer either."

Also Robert Bowling saying no plan exisits for this or any other CoD game is good enough for me, but I wont hold it against the haters to carry on hating.

Shack: By the way, have you changed the way multiplayer games function on the PC at all?

Robert Bowling: PC will be the same as it always was.

few months before they announced no dedicated servers for mw2.

No that just says that mw2 will always be free, not future cods which is what kotick has been saying.

The fact he explicitly says mw2 not the cod series is noteworthy.

Plus that just mentions playing multiplayer, the table listed earlier in this thread covers cosmetic and game 'enhancing' subscriptions. For example playing the game will always be free, but for £9 a month you get extra costumes/weapons and free map packs etc etc.

I'd be interested to see the stats for Battlefield Heroes as they similarly charge money for tat like costumes, if that makes reasonable money then i would guess Activision have taken note.

Oh so you mean going in like EA do with BC2? Charging extra at POS for VIP access then charging extra again for costume changes?

Yes Activision are the spawn of the devil, yet BC2 is amazing.

They're not forcing you to buy those costumes though are they?

Activision are wanting to force you to pay to multiplay.

Activision are wanting to force you to pay to multiplay.

they arent forcing you to do anything at the minute.

They're contemplating how to make more money and microtransactions (just like in Hereos) is almost certainly the route it will take (if they do it)

Its how PC games like Farmville etc.. have spawned.

The question now is do they mean "you wont have to pay to play but there will be microtransactions and more DLC" or "it will stay the same"

the latter seems unlikely.

they want to make more money. I honestly believe they dont know yet how they are going to do it, and are internally discussing what ways they could employ to do so.

Some of this has leaked out, and i think the negative response from the community has proved to activision that paying for multi player wouldn't work as people wouldn't pay and the backlash would be immense.

It seems to me like greedy corporations are ruining everything these days....
Since they have gotten involved in gaming in a big way we have had endless amounts of dumbed down pump em out once a year titles that get the massive budgets but arent doing anything really new.

Its so sad to see all these clones and sequels year after year when in the gaming world allmost anything is possible, they really could make some great inventive stuff that would break new ground but no instead they want to milk the cash cow and keep it all dumb and the same just like they do (mostly) in Hollywood.

Viva the indy studios I say!!!

They're trying to break from the norm to make more money, if it's successful i wouldn't be surprised to see EA follow suit fairly quickly with a Sports games sub. It's the same as newspapers charging for online access now, they're all looking at the Times to see if it's a success before doing it themselves.

Don't get me wrong i think this is a stupid move but then again EA lost $82m in Q3 this year compared to Activisions $15m profit, so on a purely fiscal level they're doing something right. When you can make up to $2m selling a digital star pony in WoW then it's going to make you push the limits.

Just to make it clear though i don't like Kotick or Activision :p so no nerd rage from anyone please.

At the end of the day none of the MW packs listed earlier in the thread charge for actual multiplayer access, it's purely for extras like customisations or leagues, you can still play and enjoy the game without spending a penny over the purchase price, as long as that stays the case then i don't really care what Activision do. Yes WoW may be more monetised since Kotick came along but all of that is for non essential goods, as long as that stays the same then i don't really see the problem. If enough people pay for MW2 subs to make it profitable then fair play to them really, but i won't be one of them.

Yeah... Fifa =/= Modern Warfare. FPS =/= Subcription gameplay.

Football games (and other sports games) could potentially work given that the real situation changes constantly anyway, but they already have a pretty solid reason to release a new game year after year so why change.

I'm waiting for the inevitably CoD where they release a re-hashed MW2 SP (which was re-hashed MW) and then give you 2 maps to play. Then of course they will slowly add in new modes and maps that should already of existed in the original release and no doubt try to pass it off as new content.
