Getting this error when trying to install windows 7 64bit over my 32 bit windwos XP.

I've restarted with the CD in but nothing happens just boots up as normal?

I'm using a AMD x3 and

that motherboard.

What am i doing wrong? Thanks..

You can't upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit. You need to do a fresh install. Back everything up and in the BIOS change the Boot Priority to your optical drive and that will boot from the CD. Format the harddrive partition where XP is at the moment (This will remove anything on the C drive) and install Windows 7 on there. That is, assuming you have the full retail version. If you only have the upgrade disk then you need to use the 32 bit one.

I am really sorry about this as i am a total noob ;)

But, i installed XP you see just as it was here, so i have nothing on that i want, so can i just boot from drive and install the windwos 7? I did buy the full version, i want it all gone and windwos 7 ON!

If i have to format first how do i do this? Also how do i boot from drive.. SORRY

you cannot upgrade from windows xp, you can only do a clean install.

to do this, you must go into the bios, and look for a setting like "boot disk priority". Set this so that your DVD drive is on top of the list, so when the pc restarts, it will load a temporary operating enviroment off the DVD instead of your hard drive. From this enviroment, you can make a clean install of windows 7

edit, beaten to it :P

the formatting is part of the setup, and is easy

As soon as you see the Asus logo when you start up your system, you need to either press F8, Delete, or whatever button it tells you to press to get into set up. That will get you into the BIOS. Just find the Boot Disk Priority and change it to the DVD drive.
When you boot off from the disk, Windows 7 will give you the option to format the drive when you choose where to install it.

Thank you very much this is my first build and for some reason the installing stuff is the hardest part!! Sorry i will try it now heheh can;t wait...

Reboot, right at the start, F2 or DELETE key to enter the BIOS settings.

You should a setting somewhere called BOOT PRIORITY. Make sure the DVD drive is the first. Save BIOS settings (F10), insert the Win 7 DVD in. Reboot.

It will then ask you which partition to install on, format, ect...

If you have more problems, just ask :) Occasionally, it can be a bit tricky.

EDIT : Ninja'd! :p
