Hi Guys

Im a little concerned and need some advice.

I put my car up for sale on the Autotrader and I have had 2 interested buyers, but both seem really dodgy.

Firstly there grasp of the written english language is very suspect, please read!

count it sold,OK.

count it sold,OK.

Concerning the price and payment ,i will be happy to pay you £12800.00 for it .

I will send you a Bankers draft of £4,500.00 which i will allow to clear into your bank account .

You will deduct £1,000.00 as non-refundable deposit.

You will send £3,500.00 to shipping agent asap the cheque has cleared because I was informed by him that, he will need the funds for shipping in advance at least a weekend before i will be in UK.

The remaining balance of £11700.00 payed into your bank account or by cash before it can be pick up.i will be waiting for 48hrs for you to confirmed the balance before the shipping agent can pick it up .Let me know the best way you want the balance to be paid?

You need not to worry as our prepaid shipping Agent will come to pick it up from your base for shipment asap the balance has been confirmed by you .the reason for this shipment method is as a result of the congestion at the Singapore seaport, which does not make it directly shippable there.

I will compensating you with £100 for the time involve in paying the shipping agent and also for you to withdraw the advert immediately you receive the deposit.

If you accept my terms of payment,Get back to me with the NAME ,ADDRESS AND CONTACT MOBILE TELEPHONE NUMBER for Bankers draft to be delivered to you .I look forward to a successful transaction with you and await your urgent response.

PLEASE NOTE,ITS WHEN THE FULL PAYMENT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED BY YOU BEFORE THE DOCUMENT WILL BE RELEASE TO ME AND SIGN

This is the second time some one has said they will buy the car and asked for my name address and telephone number, Im just a little concerned that they may be using this information for other reasons... they are not even interested in seeing the car....

Am I being paranoid!!! sounds way dodgy to me!!!!

I'm sorry are you for real? You would have to be a little on the not so bright side to think this is legit, I always read these things and wonder how anyone would fall for it, without sounding too harsh, now I know

At what point during reading that email did you begin to even entertain the thought it might even possibly be legitimate?

I'm curious - whilst it looks like an obvious scam to me, how does this really work, as surely you wouldn't pay the £3.5k until the cheque has cleared for £4.5k, and it seems to indicate that you're not expected to give up the car until you've received the balance in full.

Who gives a ****, you just want the money in one hit in this country when you sell a car.

Luckily i have not recieved one of these, just numb nuts who have the inability to read an advert properly and call asking if my car has full service history and the likes!!

Op it's a scam ignore :)

The point is.. why is he interested in my name address and telephone number!!!

Because it's a copy and paste email and he has no idea who he has sent it to this time. It'll be some guy in a room in Nigeria just sitting all day sending that same email to every advert on AutoTrader he can find with an email address.

They may do something dodgy with it but their primary aim is not to harvest your details, it's to trick you out of £3.5k and possibly a car too.

Just because a cheque clears into your account doesnt mean the bank cant take it back later if its stolen/fraudulent. This is how many scams work, they pay you using a stolen cheque and it clears, you take the money out and of course send the item as you think you are in the clear.

A few months later the bank contacts you to ask for the money back as it turns out it was stolen/fraudulent. You have to pay the money back or the bank will chase you for it and call in collectors etc.

So you get the 4.5k ( which is stolen ) and pay him the 3.5k.. the bank then want the 4.5k back from you, but you now only have 1k left!... the scammer gets 3.5k of legit money from you, and you are left down 3.5k because you got greedy.

This all works because people are greedy and most people do not know enough about cheques and clearing to cover themselves.
