Right guys i am after the following either a 330i or a 330d ?

What are the pro's and cons of each one ? MPG, service intervals, prices etc etc...

Help would be much appreciated.

Oh i got about £6k to spend.

What milage do you do?

MPG wise, I'm averaging 44.7MPG for this current tank of diesel, although for the lifespan of my ownership of the car, its closer to 37MPG.

Not quite sure they will "hold their value" all that well, you only have to look at prices of e36's to see that even a £6k E46 has a way to fall yet.

Mine is a manual, and I do about the same milage annually.

On a motorway jaunt I'm looking at 47-50MPG, and around town 30-35.

330i will be less likely to generate annoying bills. Get that.

Will it though?

Of the things that have gone wrong with mine, they have all been problems that could have afflicted the 330i too.

PAS Pump,
Aircon Compressor,
Engine Mount,
Clutch,
Central Locking,

Is yours a 330d ?

I get about 550 miles to a tank on average, mainly motorway/A roads is my normal driving. 330Ci manual.

Similar MPG figures to MadMossy, I'd say.

I posted a similar thread to this before I got mine, as I was going to be doing relatively high mileage and considered the diesel for fuel savings.

For this price point, the diesel will be quite high mileage and there is a bit more to go wrong with them at this stage (expensive!) compared to the petrol. For your mileage I don't know that the diesel would offer much in the way of fuel savings or service costs.

This is a really easy thread to answer because £6k wont buy a nice 330d at all, it'll buy one that will be shabby and throw enormous bills at you.

Spend £5k on a 330i and keep the £1k change to throw into the money sucking pit it'll probably become :p

Whilst everything thats gone wrong with paradigms so far (Though I could have sworn it threw a turbo?) is not 330d specific there remains that risk of injector/turbo issues which you dont get with a 330d, and even taking this out of the equation generally speaking you wont get a really nice 330d for less than £6k anyway.

I would like something thats going to hold its value more

Errr are you sure this is the right car for you? £6k is nothing - it doesnt matter how much it holds its value because its already worthless. If you seriously concerned about the residual value on a £6k car then think long and hard before buying one of these...

I paid £7k for mine and immediatly depreciated it away to zero - these are 'disposable' money cars now, you buy it knowing you will be its last owner for any sort of reasonable amount of money.

Mine was just over 6k, and again, everything that went wrong could have gone on any e46, at almost any milage (bar clutch).

His is a Sport but he bought it off a good friend who had owned it since 3 years old. It was therefore different to most £6k 330d's. Most £6k 330d's have multiple less than careful owners, patchy history, etc.

I have a 530i Sport (Mechanically it's almost identical to the 330i) which I have owned for 4 years. We also have an 02 530d (Again, mechanically, almost identical to the 330d) which my parents have owned since it was less than 3 years old.
