GTX 470 in SLI or just one GTX 480?

I would suggest if buying right now a 5970. You get GTX470 SLI performance on one card for about 50 quid less.

However, if you're buying in September, keep your options open because the ATI refresh will be coming along at some point, which will ruffle things up a bit and result in price drops =)

I would get one 470(or 5850) now as at your resolution it will be fine, then at future date add another if required, you never know the prices may of dropped a bit by then.

As a 5970 for that resolution is just a waste of money and if you get a higher resolution monitor in the future you would be able to sell what you have and get one of the latest offerings with the money you saved from a 5970(or add another 470/5850)

If you are not planning to build till Sept just wait and see what happens. With the exchange rate going up and down and how tech moves so fast it could be quite different.

Anyway imo a single faster high end card is better then multiple slower cards.

I was trying to make this decision last week and ended up with a 480. Reason being is that with one 480 I can add another later if I need more performance but if I already had 2 470s or 460s then the upgrade options are limited.

More likely to 'need' to add another 460 or 470 to have enough power for future titles, so I can see the logic in getting the highest end single card solution from either gpu maker. If it's a minor difference then maybe not, otherwise yes.

Cool. Thanks for the advice guys. I will look come September, and see what comes up. Like I said, I wanted to cover most of my options now, so I can buy come September. I will keep an eye out for the ATI refresh, and see what comes up. Certainly interesting advice. To 480 or SLI 470s will still be an option.

I saw a review, forget which one now, but the 470 sli set-up beat the 5970 a little more often than not in most tests. Once you pushed up to 2560x1600 iirc the 5970 did better than at lower resolutions, it was certainly a lot closer.

Now, all I need to do is determine which cooling solution to use. Wish I could find a review of the Zotac AMP! version of the card (given I was considering a Prolimatech MK-13 to cool mine in SLI, the cost would be roughly the same, with a factory overclock already added. And I think both solutions take up 3 slots).

Having said that, 2 cards each using 3 slots each, gets nasty, as it uses my PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX8_1 slots. Does running a graphics card on a PCIX8 slot affect the performance greatly?

Aslong as its PCI-e x8 @ 2.0 it will be more than fine for a GTX470. If its only gen-1 speed then it might take small hit.
