Morning all, I hope you can help.

My gpu i feel is in need of an upgrade, i have a 8800GTX, had it for years and have loved the card - but the tech is getting old and i feel that it may be time for me to move on so i can play the latest games.

I have a budget of £200 and welcomed the release of the GTX 460 models that are coming out. it seems however that the cards are having fan noise and heat issues (as mentioned on another thread of this forum) meaning that if i were to get a 460 - i havent got a clue what one to get, as no-one seems to have anything nice to say about their card.

Questions are as follows...

1.) If i was to get a 460GTX, will i notice a vast improvement from my 8800GTX?

2.) Would i get more performance from 2 x 8800GTX's on SLI than a 460? (my mobo supports it and that may be another route.)

3.) What card would you peeps advise on a £200 Budget?

I think the 460 would be a better single card solution then the 8800s.

Simlpy put the 8800s are old now.

According to the big thread in this section about the 460s the Gigabyte model seems to be a good choice.

Ask in that thread about which make to get.

And also yes it would be a significant improvement.

I would go for a 5850, or if you want to stick with Nvidia i would go for the 470 for another 40 quid.

gtx 470 are loud too and consume lots of power...

even when just browsing the web the temps start to ramp up... i found this pretty annoying so walked away.

i have seen a palit gtx 470 wth custom dual cooler that interests me but its £270 and still has the problem that it consumes loads of power under any kind of load.

Get a 5850

Or 465 if you must go nvidia, you will note they have come right down in price now.

Ive heard nothing positive about the 465 in any way shape or form since the release of the 460. i have nothing against ATI, they have made some lovely cards, but im a hardcore CSS fan, and see that there are more ATI based errors than nvidia ones. if i bought a 5850, and then got an error 40 on the hl2 engine i would literally scream the house down and have a 'reet temper tantrum!

how is the performance of the 5850 compared to the 460 ?

5850 is 15% faster than a stock 1GB 460, I guess it will be on par with the highly overclocked 460s at £200. Overclocked though it will beat the high end 460s I guess.

I guess it must be down to the individual and the case/air flow/position as none of these problems effect myself with my GTX470. Yes it is louder than the 5850 but it does not bother me.

If you have never had a ATi card then now is a perfect time to give it ago since the 460 appears to have some issues your against.

You will also be happy to know that the ATI cards seem to perform better in source based games, even if the engine is heavily cpu dependant. My 5850 plays css like a dream.

In fact my laptop with a 5650 plays css like a dream... I am sure that you wouldn't be dissapointed with the 5850 or a 460 for css but you certainly don't need all the power if thats all you are playing.

If you are worried about noise my reference 5850 doesn't even spin up off of its 28% fan speed for css this is at the absolute max settings (1680x1050) and pushing several hundred fps.

I can't say about the 460 unfortunatly as I don't own any NV tech from this round but lets be honest either card is going to be more than fit for purpose if the requirement is some dx9 css action.

if this was true then your case has awful air flow

loudness, pick up a pair of headphones and listen to music

power, well unless you play 12 hours a day, 7 days a week the cost would be a matter of pennies not pounds

If You are totally logical, besides cuda and physx the 460 is a good way short of the 5850 regarding performance/power efficiency !

To get anywhere near the 5850 You would have to get the best available 460 and overclock it to the max, the heat, noise and power consumption will go through the roof !

As a standard card the 460 look good but I seriously doubt it will have enough performance, it is after all just hyped up midrange card that got some glowing reviews but is proving not so wonderful with a lot of the end users.

my case has great airflow?

i dont want to have to wear earphones in my own bedroom, thats maddness. its not a solution, thats a bodge that ignores the problem.

Where did i say i wear headphones ?, your presuming your situation is the same as mine, you do not have to justify your setup to me as i was talking about my own not yours, both are as valid as each other. Just accept your view is not the same as everyone else's.
